The current Thunderbird messaging API is single thread only - time for an upgrade?

As a very satisfied use of Thunderbird and also using the indexing software Copernic, I note that indexing Thunderbird emails takes tens of hours.

Copernic states that this is because "the current Thunderbird messaging API is single thread only".

If this is so (I have no expertise), an upgrade of the API would be nice so Thunderbird may work better in commercial and high-volume/high productivity environments.
