Making moves
Status: In development

Currently I'm doing research on a heap of products, and collating into an online spreadsheet. I'm wearing out the Ctrl+Tab keys flicking back and forth, copying/pasting etc!

It would be awesome to "pop-out" a tab and have it "float" on top like what Picture-in-Picture does. I know you can the tab in a new window, resize it, move it etc but it still doesn't stick on-top and has borders that take up space.

I've seen extensions that try to do split screen for tabs but they don't seem to work very well. Thanks!

In-window split screen tabs

I've read a couple similar proposals but they are not quite what I'm envisioning.

The key part being that a separate window is not created, windows management of OS is often slow and unreliable, especially when several other programs are open.

I think something akin to how vscode handles multiple files displayed at once. The file that you want to add to the current screen can be dragged to the left, right, bottom or top of the view window (coding window) relative to the current file be displayed.

I propose that similar thing should be possible with tabs in Firefox were a tab can be dragged onto the current window where the user wishes to split the screen, (a slight preview can be shown for how the tab will be placed) and when the mouse is released the split screen will be in effect. Both tabs will then appear as selected in the tab bar. Shortcuts should also be in place to split the current selected tab to a given direction.

Some might be worried that this interferes with splitting of tabs into separate windows, but firstly it should be optional and secondly creating a separate window should still be possible with the mouse by dragging the tab onto somewhere else except the current tab view window.

Sorry if this has been proposed already but I haven't found this specific idea.

Banger of a feature. There are examples of it being successfully implemented in other browsers. Mostly chromium-based like Edge and Brave but there's also FF-based Zen which has it in almost perfect working condition but unfortunately has been going downwards in many other departments so having split view in stock FF is going to be sick af.

Strollin' around

Exciting! Do we have a timeline? and are there forms to contribute? Is firefox taking the iframes angle, similar to floorp?

forgot to login, and lost my post comment.

Anyway, I read all the comments and still don't see my question answered, a question I have been asked multiple times a year by others since at least Win7 was released or even earlier. Why do browsers not have a single tab setting in which a single tab can be set up to streamline workflow by allowing users to have 2 - 4 different search tabs open simultaneously in a chart display format? Basically, it's like having 4 different monitor displays open at once without having the actual computer monitors. It's a single window tab with 4 separate displays. They would also need to allow for exterior programs to the browser to be able to access each, without having to jump between different open windows or tabs. It's a very BASIC workflow layout. I mean you can do exactly the same thing if you have a standalone computer with 20+ monitor screens going, each with it's own stuff showing. But this really does not work for things like laptops, tablets, or android devices. With those, it becomes a crowded, jumbled, overlapping mess! A basic PRIMARY settings option that can be easily found - like the Homepage or refresh buttons - is a must for almost anyone needing to streamline their workflow. I'm sure there are other uses, but spending several minutes hunting that one webpage I needed to use for something but can't find easily because I accidentally minimized the tab is a real PAIN IN THE ***! But as I said: I get asked this question A LOT! And honestly don't know why none of the Browser companies have never addressed it.

I hope this was understandable, since my original post was lost/deleted accidentally previously, and I may have forgotten some parts of my question or assumed this post contained them...

Edit Update: Just saw one of the posts on here contained a Browser called Vivaldi or something - IT CONTAINED THE LAYOUT SETTINGS that EVERY SINGLE BROWSER should have automatically designed years ago! Why not just use Vivaldi then? Because of incompatibility issues. Not every browser can be used by different devices, and that particular browser is - to me at least - a nearly complete unknown. Why can't Firefox do this? Why HASN'T Firefox done this? Get the picture?
