The "Smart Window" feature should be split into many different features that can be turned on and off rather than leaving it as a monolithic feature.

Sure having a one click "disable all" toggle is probably something you'll want to have, but the current setup is basically toggling tons of options at once that I don't necessarily want to do.

For example, it changes multiple things that all override user settings that cannot be individually toggled:

  • Theme
  • Layout of the toolbar (by adding multiple buttons—the tab organization one and the ask one that can't be removed or moved)
  • New tab page (and thus search behavior)

While some people might want a super immersive completely new experience that overrides all other browser settings, I personally hoped to be able to use some of the features and have them integrate (with minimal intrusion) into my normal intensively customized Firefox setup.

Many of the browser integrations like the `@tab`, integrations with history (more generally semantic history search), and other features seem potentially useful enough to at least try out, but the fact that I need to mess up my whole setup just to try them is very frustrating.

I think that giving more granular control over what is enabled would help make this much more useful.

My personal preference is that the features here would basically become something like an improved and better integrated version of the LLM Chat sidebar options that was added a while ago. This turns it from basically an iframe to a chatbot site to something that actually feels like it is part of the browser. Additionally, I think the tab grouping should be something that can be enabled separately.

Again, it seems to have some features that could be useful, but I would be much more likely to actually try them if they didn't force change lots of other browser settings too.
