After I switched over from Outlook to Thunderbird I missed an important email in the spam folder. Most emails in the spam folder are indeed spam, but not all. Therefore you have to check and clean the spam folder regularly. Therefore I think that the option to have this folder checked should be on by default.

All the messages should appear in the spam folder when you click on it.  So what precisely do you mean by "checked"?

When you open Thunderbird, you will see the number of new emails appear at the end of the label "InBox", but not for the spam folder by default. So Thunderbird does not "check" if unread email items exist in the spam folder by default. You have to open it first. So when you are new to Thunderbird you might miss important emails in the spam folder. As I user I expect this checking to be done for all important folders.
