Status: New idea

Hello to Mozilla Community,

Current stable version (102.12.0) and NEW beta version (115.0b4) of Thunderbird, doesn't support Right to Left typing and alignment for Right to Left (RTL) languages. older versions had private extensions which mostly supported it.

Emails, words and characters written in RTL context are getting mixed up.

please consider to add this feature to Thunderbird.

Thanks

Thunderbird 143.0 and up is no longer supporting BiDi Mail UI  https://github.com/eyalroz/bidimailui/issues/150 do we need an intrinsic support from Thuderbird !

As @MickeyCohen mentioned the only solution that was BiDi Mail UI is not compatible with the latest version anymore. Is there any new solution?

There are hundreds of millions of people who use a right-to-left language, such as all Arabic and Persian speakers as well as Hebrew speakers. It is so unfortunate that Thunderbird has be come the most unreliable email solution with regard to RTL support. Until and including Thunderbird release 142 the BiDi Mail UI extension provided support for right-to-left languages. Now it's again broken.

Other office packages such as LibreOffice can handle RTL languages without a glitch. With Thunderbird RTL has been repeatedly broken.

If the Thunderbird team is unable or unwilling to address the RTL issue, perhaps it will at least test it's releases against the current plugin solution?

Of course I agree with MikeyCohen that the best solution to the problem is built-in support in Thunderbird. This would require the developers to add RTL to the test scenario.

RTL

It is really important to add RTL support in Thunderbird. The addons can't keep up with the version updates. It needs to be made a standard feature because it is a crucial functionality for all users of RTL languages. There are about a billion of us. Is that enough?

the fact that this feature has been requested for 23 Years!!!! (119857 - There is no way to set the reading/composing directionality via the UI) is mind bogglingly stupid, every common email writing service has RTL, the fact that until now there has been only one person who had thanklessly worked on an addon for this basic functionality while Mozilla keeps pushing updates that break this person's work while not implementing it themselves is a disgrace for the organization.

Thunderbird is risking his anticipated position in market (Pro) by not adding this basic feature so far!

Add text directionality buttons and options in the composing window

In Thunderbird, when composing a message there is no text directionality buttons like in other text editors.
It is really useful for bilingual writers, and also for people who speaks in RTL languages.
Right now there is just text alignment, but it is not enough, and a lot of us have to use extensions to add these buttons and fix this problem, and many other problems regarding RTL languages.

Text alignment LTR, text directionality (unchangeable) LTR:

Text alignment RTL, text directionality (unchangeable) LTR, notice the punctuation marks are still LTR:

Potentially similar idea here: Right to Left languages support in Thunderbird

Thank you @Jon , you are right. I must have missed it when I searched because it is an old (but still really relevant and important) issue.

@Matnas great! I can merge the two threads together so the conversation stays focused in one space.

I agree and have posted about this before as well.

As far as I know, we never received an explanation why this option of RTL is not included.
Many people are interested in RTL, but cannot understand why it is absent.  I think that we deserve an explanation!                   Where/what is the obstacle to solve this matter??
