I have been trying out the new sidebar/vertical tab from the beginning, and appreciate how it end up now, with Edge like auto extend on hover. After using the original one without auto extend, I found that it's more convenient to close the tab, because the close button is on the upper left corner of the favicon, and I can click on it directly. While with auto extend, I would need to first put my mouse to the left side bar to get it auto extended, then the close button appear on the right of the bar, and I have to move my mouse to the right to click the close button. The situation is similar when the side bar is on the right.

I think we can improve on it, by putting the close button on the left side of the side bar (when the side bar is on the left), more like the position of the mute button after auto extend.

I came here to add this idea as well. It's very annoying to move my mouse to the left, wait for the tabs to expand, and then move it back to the right to close the tab.

If you enable the “Move sidebar to the right” option in the “Customize sidebar” menu, the close button will be under the cursor right after you hover the tab.

However, IMO you will likely find out that the button is too easy to accidentally click even when you just want to open or arrange the tabs. Actually, I was lured to this Idea thread looking for exactly the opposite feature (so, thanks @Agentvirtuel!).

If you are comfortable with the keyboard, you can alternatively close the tab by right clicking the tab, pressing “c” to focus on the “Close Tab” context menu item, and then pressing “Enter”.
