Please give Firefox for macOS a proper light app icon

Firefox already supports separate light and dark app icons on macOS, but the current “light” icon still uses a relatively dark purple background. As a result, Firefox visually stands out in a light macOS Dock instead of integrating with the surrounding applications.

This is particularly puzzling because Firefox on iOS and iPadOS already has a clearly light default icon that fits the platform much better.

Bug 1997245 shows that Firefox for macOS originally also had a white light variant. Mozilla deliberately replaced it with purple because the white background was considered to provide insufficient contrast with the Firefox logo. I think that trade-off is wrong from a platform-integration perspective.

The Firefox logo clearly works on a light background on iOS and iPadOS. On macOS, the current purple “light” icon attracts unnecessary visual attention in the Dock and makes Firefox feel less native than Safari and other well-integrated Mac applications.

Please either:

• restore a genuinely light macOS icon for Light mode, preferably consistent with the iOS/iPadOS version; or
• provide an app-icon choice in Firefox Settings so users can choose between Mozilla’s official variants.

Firefox is exceptionally configurable in much more consequential areas. It would be strange for something as constantly visible as the Dock icon to remain an unavoidable branding choice when Mozilla already has suitable alternative assets.

In the interim - if the Firefox icon isn't to your taste, macosicons hosts loads of user-contributed custom icons you can quickly download and apply.

To apply your custom icon:

1. Navigate to the Applications folder from the sidebar of Finder
2. Right click on Firefox
3. Tap Get Info
4. In the Get Info view that pops up, drag your downloaded icon towards the top left beside where filename Firefox.app and the filesize are shown; placing it on top of the icon. A small green plus symbol will appear when you're hovering in the right area.

You can only do this for non-system apps that were not pre-installed on macOS. This method works for both downloaded and App Store apps, but you'll need to authenticate with your login password (or fingerprint) when applying custom icons to App Store downloaded applications.

Examples of pre-installed system apps where you can't change the icon: Safari, Mail, Photos, Notes, Messages, Facetime, etc.
