With the new split tab, it would be really nice to see a right click "Open in split tab" option on hyperlinks. Also being able to drag a hyperlink to one side of the browser to auto split tab it, similar to the same feature for opening in a new tab (drag to the top of the browser).

I am really loving the "Add Split View" feature. A great addition would be if, say, I'm browsing a news website and right click on a headline I had a "Open Link in Split View" option in the same way we have "Open Link in New Tab" etc.

When selecting this option:

1. If Split View isn't already in use, initialize a split view with the link in the new side pane
2. If Split View is already being used, replace the URL of the side pane with the selected link

I just came to post this very idea!  Firefox definitely should allow this.

Exactly this - instead of focussing entirely on tabs...

Right now it's great for when I'm working, for example, in a Discourse forum, I can duplicate the tab, then I have to split my tab and then add the new (duplicate) to the split - then I can start writing a comment in one half whilst being able to scroll and read... then I sometimes wish to search an item - select some text and search (in split) because right now, the best option remains 'in new window' and use windows instead of split.

Referring to this post, I’d like to add my support for this feature request as well. Having an “Open Link in Split View” option in the context menu would make the feature much more intuitive and accessible during regular browsing. It feels like a natural extension of how we already use “Open in New Tab,” and would greatly improve multitasking. Hope the team considers implementing this in next update itself. @Jon

I just came here to just post this btw!
Kudos.

The "Open link in split screen"

The "Open link in split screen" menu item should be under the "Open link in a new window" menu item.

A one-click split-tab option would also be appreciated (as I loath using the M2 menu as a general rule)

I know ^Click, +Click, and +^Click are all occupied by the Open in New Tab, Open in New Window, and Open in New Tab and Refocus to It actions respectively.

Maybe assigning Open in SplitView could be assigned to !Click, or (assuming the feature doesn't already exist and I just ain't know about it) the modified Click behaviors could be made configurable, since I never use +^Click anyway.

I have no idea how I ended up on the mailing list for firefix ideas split-tab discussion.

Even without the spam my default inbox (spam folder) is filling up with stuff faster than I like, and for this reason it kind of bothers me that I am participating in this important endevour.

Came here to suggest this as well. Would be useful to see these two use cases supported:

1) For a single tab: open link in split view creates a split view within the tab

2) For an existing split tab: open link in split view uses the other split panel (so you can maintain an "index" in one panel while viewing content in the other).

Thanks!

The current split tab implementation feels more restrictive than flexible for certain workflows.

Before split tabs were introduced, I relied on the built-in chatbot feature by modifying about:config (specifically browser.ml.chat.provider) to load a custom URL. This effectively created a more useful setup: one persistent side (e.g. a chatbot or reference tool) and one main tab that I could freely swap.

Even with split tabs now available, I still prefer that method because it allows:

  • A persistent panel that remains unchanged

  • A hot-swappable main tab for browsing

By comparison, split tabs treat both sides more equally, which reduces efficiency for this kind of use case.

A potential improvement would be:

  • Allow one side of a split tab to be “pinned” or persistent

  • Allow the other side to behave as a normal tab that can be freely changed without affecting the persistent side

Additionally, reopening this setup is currently slow when done via the workaround (editing config or scripts), since the page has to reload each time. A native implementation could preserve state or reload more efficiently.

This would make split tabs significantly more useful for workflows involving constant reference (e.g. chatbots, documentation, or notes) alongside active browsing.

was going to suggest the same thing - good thing the search function exists 🙂

Thanks for your role in improving the new split view feature! This idea landed in Firefox 150 — you can now right-click any link and choose Open Link in Split View to open it alongside your current tab. Try it out and let us know what you think 🙌
