open in a new tab - unobtrusive

On Firefox mobile I frequently open articles in new tabs. Quite often, the "switch" bar will obscure other page content (for example, the "next page" button on my RSS feed reader). I would like to be able to have the ability to configure the length of time that this message remains on screen.
