new column for e-mail-address of sender

Hello,

I was very surprised that Thunderbird does not offer an option to show the e-mail-adress of the sender in a column in the table (like the columns "From" and "Correspondents"). This new column would be very useful to quickly identify spam/junk e-mails.

This feature can be added with add-ons:

•  "Show Address Only" by R.I.P.

This feature seems very basic and simple and like it should not require an add-on.

If you do a Google search for this feature, then you find many people, who have asked for this feature for many years.

@Yannnd Thanks for tips. In fact I have the same problem as everyone and thanks to you, I switched to Betterbird, and change those parameters, but without any effects. I suspect that they have kept the parameter but it doesn't effect the "new supernova underlying"

This is essential! Come on, why didn't you allow keeping this extension active, and why didn't you implement it directly in Thunderbird?

As much as I like the new version of Thunderbird 115, I'm really disappointed that full-address-column addon stopped working, with no solution in foreseeable future caused by revoked permissions for addons.

Please add this functionality into mainstream Thunderbird.

In my role as a mail system administrator for several organizations, I constantly have to battle with  "helpful" UI enhancements in mail applications that hide information critical to blocking messaging malware/spam.

Previously TB with Full Address Column was an easy recommendation for my users as it saved everyone time and energy with immediate feedback on the legitimacy of incoming email.  Not foolproof but an essential tool in the toolkit.

With TB115, it has been dumbed down so you have to look inside each message to see the header information.  This wastes time and is easily skipped by users to their peril.  

This reduction in feature is bad UI/UX design and as others have suggested, creates security issues in the user experience where they didn't exist previously.

Personally, I am constantly reminded of the extra time I must now spend screening the volumes of email that spill over the transom.

TB team, please restore this facility.  Either provide a means for the Full Address Column add-on to work or build-in the feature directly.

Yes, right now it is absolutely essential! There HAS to be at least a few ways to recognize malware without clicking on it.

Many malware messages use "support@popularwebsite.com" as the name to cover the real address - there should be visual differentiation between the name and actual email address.

Additional Messages Column to Display Email Address ONLY

I would like a column that will display ONLY the declared email address of the sender.

Your From and Correspondent columns will only do that if nothing else appears in the From field, i.e. if there is a person or company name also these columns sometimes display just that and not the email address, and at other times both with the email address coming after the other text.

I want/need a column with ONLY the email address in it.

The reason for this request is that it would allow me to sort a list of messages in a folder by declared sender email addresses to see which of them are being sent by the same address very easily.

This would be very helpful in setting up spam filters on my mail server.

I'm getting spam that will use the same sender email address but lots of different sender names or descriptions.

My mail server's mail filters allow me to filter by text strings in various fields of the emails. So if I know the sender email address they are using on those emails I can filter them out and auto-delete them.

FYI it also matters not that the sender email address is really the address they are sending it from, just that it appears in the From header so all spam emails using it can be filtered out.

Without a column that displays the sender/from email address ONLY I am thus stuck filtering out only those that use the same sender name/description all the time.

Having this requested extra column would double the data I have to filter with.

There are always calls from the Thunderbird team asking to support the Thunderbird project, yet when feedback is supplied it appears to be largely ignored.

It's trivial for them to add it as an option - around an hour's work for one person.

If I hadn't spent so long massaging TB115 to look like previous TB I'd be looking at Betterbird, hmm ok I'll look at it anyway.

And agreed the developers ignore comments. "Pssht, what do users know, we're in charge here"

What is wrong with the Thunderbird developers?  Why do they insist on ignoring this request?  What is going on?  This is a CRITICAL requirement due to phishing scams.  We need to see the REAL ADDRESSS BEFORE OPENING THE EMAIL.

I  remeber that,  this function exist in thunderbird early  versions. Then for some reason thunderbird development started to support cheaters and the possibility to see the real addresses of the senders was removed. As a counter move, add-ons appeared that made it possible to see the addresses of the senders

I found an excellent solution - switch to BetterBird 115.  Then go Settings > General > Config Editor and change the variable mail.addressDisplayAuthor to 2 = e-mail or 3 = name and email.

What is the problem with Mozilla?  Why can't they rectify an obvious security problem?

The standard procedure with a mozilla product is:

• well working over all, just a few some minor issues
• install plugins to fix them
• get used to a superior product
• update for security
• surprise! "old" plugins don't work anymore
• "you didn't need them anyway, did you?"
• frantically search for new solutions
• find none but dozens of other users with the same issue
• end up rolling back to an older version

This is not fun. An auto upgrade should not remove features, and warn before proceeding.

Anyway for the issue at had: Just add it to the base version. It is ridiculous that we have to argue for it, it should've been the default setting in the first place.

This is a hard requirement.  In the past Thunderbird should have, but did not have to implement this because plugins did this on their behalf.  Now that plugins are prevented from doing this, Thunderbird MUST prioritize this as most of the diehard users expect and require this functionality. 

Thunderbird is an excellent tool and the team has done great work.  Please do not drive people away.
