From the previous post on Crowdicity:

I would like to see vertical tabs baked in. MS Edge now has it out of the box!

I currently use addons for this - but there's no way to disable the top tab bar, which duplicates the tabs and takes up space.

Vertical tabs (with top bar disabled) would free up more space for web content, which is (usually) vertical. Most screens are widescreen (RIP ThinkPad 4:3 ratios), so the less browser UI at the top/bottom, the more content we can view.

Most important feature here is being able to hide the tab-bar

I came here to submit an idea, and this is EXACTLY what I want! Like all the others mentioned, all the other browsers offer some type of version of this natively (MS Edge's implementation is especially really good). It really does a lot in one's workflow. Here are some reasons the current solutions aren't sufficient:

- Third-party add-ons always face risk of not being supported by the developer eventually.

- They don't hide the horizontal tabs by default and doing is exceedingly difficult.

- The UI for the add-ons is quite messy and you clearly get the sense that it is not natively baked in.

PLEASE PLEASE add this feature.

You are correct. I had not paid attention to that little down arrow. It had a nice list vertical tabs. After you pointed that feature, I found out about Firefox View on the right side, which is even more powerful. It has current vertical list of open tabs, closed tabs, and tabs from other devices. Nice job Firefox development team.

This request/idea has been trending for so long, and there's silence from FF devs. Are there technical reasons for this not going forward?

I can't say how much I want this for my productivity. It's one of the biggest complains about Firefox.

Two years and noting... horizontally this page is mostly white....vertically I see only a portion. Move the the tabs into white space. When I do research, I use Edge by now as I it is easier to read and have many tabs at the same time including sorting and grouping them. All very sad but this must be a priority.

Just a reminder to the people here the idea seems to still be in Exploring More phase of the idea. So Mozilla / Firefox team is indeed still looking into the idea. However, I want to let the devs know that Firefox View is not the ideal solution nor an acceptable alternative. At minimum an easier way to hide the tab bar so extensions can take over tab handling. And ideally a native vertical tab navigation would be fantastic.

Wanting to come (back) to FF.  No vertical tabs is a showstopper for me.  I'll see if plugins will work, but I'm just kind of surprised this isn't supported ootb.

This isn't an official implementation of course, but check out my userChrome changes for a native-like implementation of vertical tabs for power users: https://github.com/bjesus/fireside

Can't wait for this one. Vertical tabs have become a game changer for me when I tried Edge. This and tab grouping are why I'm currently with Brave, though I really wish Firefox would have this so I could daily drive it.

@bjesus

Thanks for exposing me to Tab Center Reborn. Looking at the history of that extension, it was a continuation of Tab Center Redux per the developer but based on a Test Pilot experiment called TabCenter by Mozilla. If I understand that right. I wasn't aware Firefox experimented with its own vertical tabs extension in the past.

If the extension already exists I don't see why they can't add their own code back into the browser or at least bring their own extension back to life?

Just replied to this tweet:

You guys could do the same maybe.

@hacklschorsch This feature request has outlived Crowdicity, it will probably outlive Connect too.
When the next "customer engagement" tool arrives, this topic will crop up again, and we get another cycle of it being ignored. (But don't point it out! The overpaid people who (mis-)managed Firefox' marketshare below 3% will be very offended!)

I have over 3000 tabs, and third-party add-ons make Firefox very slow.

That, @qwryu, is a big problem in and of itself 😂
