Status: Exploring more

I'm personally a heavy tab user but have always wondered why there is almost no support for tab grouping or customization in the native tab bar in Firefox.

I think making it able to group like Google Chrome does for example or at least giving more access for extensions and add-ons would significantly improve the UI in that regard.

It would be very useful to have this feature implemented!

Still nothing, incredible....

Dear @Jon, this idea has been the most requested feature for many months now.

I have the feeling that the design and development of Tab Grouping hasn't even started yet (based on reading Firefox Nightly news). I really hope I'm wrong.

But can we at least get an honest update from Mozilla soon? It baffles me that nothing is communicated at all. I expect more from my beloved browser builder!

now it's been almost a year since the status was set to "exploring more" and nothing is happening.
no information if anything happens at all on this topic, nothing!
why is there no feedback? why is nothing happening?
it feels like the developers are avoiding this.

please finally give feedback if this feature will ever come or if the developers don't want it. this will make it easier to turn your back on firefox since they don't give a d*mn about the community's wishes.

communication is the key and the magic word, so speak to your community!

Hey all, thanks for your patience and for following up in this thread—not to mention the many great, detailed posts highlighting the importance of a feature like this! We put together a list with some of the top ideas that haven't been updated/may be pending a response (including tab grouping along with a few others) and will be working with the product team to hopefully provide some updates here soon. Stay tuned.

Unhappily, seems the truth is simple: you just don't care 😞

Thanks for the message, I really hope for some positive news here.

This is genuinely the 1 reason I switched back to Chrome and still use it most of the time - it was a sad day when Firefox lost this differentiator. When Chrome gained it that was enough to tip me to the dark side but I can't wait to return.

Hey @Jon , we understand that the team is working on something, but we're not sure on what exactly. What we're asking is the FF team can give some update on how far the feature has been developed on or by when will it come. We need something to hold on to to continue using FF despite taking a huge hit to productivity. A lot of us use only the browser for everything and tab grouping and syncing them across devices is kinda becoming basic functionality at this point. There's no turning away from it once you start using it. I even forgot there's a thing called 'another browser window'. Can we at least get a draft on the implementation? Like will it look like chrome or vivaldi's implementation? Or will it be another design? Will it sync with mobile to carry on from there? Or will each device will have to have it's own groups? It's been not months, its years old functionality missing from a major browser even if the market share is minuscule, without which would be harder to convince others to take seriously and help the 'open free web' as you and we wish to protect.

As they say, "be careful what you wish for".

Projects that are revealed early in development more often than not either change drastically during development or may even get shelved.

Do not mistake the silence as disinterest. Rather, they want to make the best first impression they can when they announce it.

Don't forget that they also have to deal with the new Webextension Standard, refining Firefox on Android, and many other priorities.

Not to mention, there do exist nice Tab Group extensions like Simple Tab Groups and Tiled Tab Groups to fill the void in the meanwhile.
