I'm personally a heavy tab user but have always wondered why there is almost no support for tab grouping or customization in the native tab bar in Firefox.

I think making it able to group like Google Chrome does for example or at least giving more access for extensions and add-ons would significantly improve the UI in that regard.

OMG THANKS SOO MUCH!!!!! I found out about this feature by accident when I dragged one of my multitude of tabs onto another tab by accident and I got SOO EXCITED!!! Though, there are a few issues specifically for my workflow, such as the groups persisting across STG groups(though as mentioned above that may need to be fixed by STG devs instead), the inability to move a group once it is made as in moving the entire 'folder' for a group would be great to have.

Also, this is more my preference and not something that would prevent me from enjoying this feature like the other issues, but it would be nice to be able to make a shortcut to use in creating a group. This is because I tend to manage my tabs using a lot of the Ctrl and Shift plus click selection features, so being able to click one tab, Shift+click another to highlight a bunch, then press a key combo to put them all into a group(bringing up the group creator and focusing input on the name field as well) would be the cherry on top for me.

Otherwise, I love the direction this is going in and hope I see some added features to this in the future, and maybe a fix from STG later since I'd still want to pair this with their groups, but I'll be going and bugging them for that one if they don't already have an issue on their git. XD

Has this feature been rolled out to everyone yet?  I still don't seem to have it.  Trying to move one tab on top of another just causes them to switch places.

I'm on version 138.0.1 and using vertical tabs.  Is there a setting I need to update?

Hello, @Dave_468 , When you right-click a tab, do you see the menu option: "Add tab to group"?

If you do have that option, then you have access to Tab Groups. To create a group via drag-and-drop, be sure to pause momentarily while the dragged tab is overlapping another tab. That will trigger the colored highlight on the tab below, which means you can drop to create a group.

If you don't see "Add tab to group" then can you check in about to see if have you disabled telemetry and opted out of studies? People who have opted out of telemetry or studies will have access to Tab Groups after the 14th of May.

Looks like I can't use this feature yet, mostly because of the incompatibility with Simple Tab Groups add-on as I have gotten too accustomed to sorting tabs into these groups based on the overall topic, and each of these groups tends to have an upward of 20+ tabs in each more often than not.

I am also not a personal fan of the suggested fix in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1940631 as I worry about possible added overhead when switching the STG groups, but I don't know enough about the code behind it to comment further other than I hope STG devs can figure it out as I personally can't use these native tab groups till they work well with STG T.T

For those who like me have grown accustomed to STG groups and would like to "sub-group" their tabs further, here is the main git issue on the STG git regarding this issue: https://github.com/Drive4ik/simple-tab-groups/issues/1237

Glad to see tab grouping finally coming to Firefox — that’s a great move.
It just needs one more thing: the ability to open a group in a new window without moving the tabs.

Great feature, was pleasantly surprised to see it implemented!

Thanks for a great product and for listening to the users, Mozilla & @ssmagula! 😀

Thank you very much for implementing this.  It's already made using Firefox far more pleasant and more productive.

Having used tab groups for a week or two now, I do have a couple of small suggestions.  First, when I right click to add a tab to an existing tab group, the tab view snaps to wherever the tab group is, even if it's several screens away.  This is a problem, because I typically move methodically from one end of my tabs to the other, adding tabs to existing groups as I find them.  It would be very helpful if my tab view remained where it was rather than jerking back to my tab group six screens away so I can simply keep moving my way through my tabs.

Second, when tab groups are closed, they appear as a hollow box.  The perimeter of the box is a thin line, and it can be difficult to easily distinguish the colors of such a thin line.  It would be helpful if a closed group were filled in so it is easier to quickly distinguish between colors.

Thanks again for the great work so far!

I'm incredibly happy and thankful this finally got merged and we can enjoy a cluterless experience. But I don't know how much can we celebrate when it has taken more than 3 years since it was originally posted

The new automatic tab groups is not effective for my work. Keep it for those who like it, but make it a permanent off/off setting in general - not in config. Thank you.

Hoarding Tabs and now Tab Groups? Keep the count with tabStats. With Tab Groups finally in Firefox, I moved everything from Chrome to Firefox and I was looking for a Tab counter but could not find any to also include Tab Groups so I went back into programming (after so many years) to make my own. I liked every minute of this. I won't call myself a full fledged programmer though, it was just fun to have a look at it again and now with the help of AI you can get tips why this error and so on.

If my Addon is useful to you and you like it, please rate it. Thanks!

@Rhialto

I want to thank you for making this useful add-on.
Functionally, I think it's great.
However, I find it a bit gaudy or assertive in terms of the way it is displayed.
As for the icon badge, the tab count display on the add-on icon is small and hard to see. I would appreciate it if only the number was displayed like the tab count icon add-on.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-count-icon/

Is the add-on name also necessary at the top of the display when the icon is clicked?
If it is necessary for you, it would be nice if it is displayed at the bottom. Or, please reduce the font size of the add-on name to about a quarter of the font size of the number of tabs or groups.
Also, I would appreciate it if you could make the add-on name something that is easily recognizable as a tab group counter, so that it can be easily found in searches and is easy to understand for those of us who are not native English speakers.

If you could take these suggestions into consideration, it would be a better add-on for me. Thank you in advance.

Hello @molio

Yesterday I was thinking that maybe some will complain on the font being too large then with CTRL-mouse wheel I was able to see how it would look smaller then I had the idea to add a way to change font size.

Now I see you post today asking about something similar. When I wrote I wasn't a full fledged programmer I just realize that I will need to redo some of the coding to properly manage resizable fonts. Making it fixed was bad and not something a true programmer would have done.

As for the number on the icon, I use the function setBadgeText like many other add-on so for now I'll keep it this way.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I will have a look at it but only in a few days when I'll be recovering from a tiny surgery.
