I'm personally a heavy tab user but have always wondered why there is almost no support for tab grouping or customization in the native tab bar in Firefox.

I think making it able to group like Google Chrome does for example or at least giving more access for extensions and add-ons would significantly improve the UI in that regard.

Recently switched over to Firefox from Chrome on both desktop and Android but tab management is so much worse on both. Really hope something is made to bridge the gap...

Tab Grouping like Chrome would be a great and useful feature

No wonder Firefox is dying.   the fact that this feature is not a fully implemented thing after 2 years is just appaling.  I really could care less about integration with AI if i cannot even sort my tabs in a meaningful way.  Just sad sad.  There was a time when i used to Donate to the Mozilla foundation but over the years it just seems whoever makes decisions have lost touch with what users wants versus developers.

I would really like this--tab groups at work mean I can collect them into Dev/QA/Stg/Prod groups, or different tasks instead of opening multiple windows
At home it means I can have them open for my 100 different hobbies

The tab grouping is for me an absolute necessity. Grouping like Chrome is perfect.

I can not switch to Firefox if this isn't fixed.

The add-ons for tab management are a hassle to work with.

I'd like the option to group based on containers. It could be an additional option in the add-on, except for the native functionality that is.

Is anything happening in here? As I can see correctly, the feature has been in development status for 2,5 years. IMO, this is a must-have feature in the world of modern browsers where people use many tabs to work. Also, this should not be a half-measure like a tree view in the sidebar.  Firefox has tabs, and grouping them is a natural way of working.

@pgrzesiecki we updated the status to 'In development' in April, and since then the team has been hard at work on this feature. We're also working with the team to share more progress here and invite early feedback from users - aka you all following along in this thread. Stay tuned and keep that feedback coming 💪

@Jon  Do you have any ticket IDs or anything listing the requirements being built or showing any status?

I've been using "Panorama Tab Groups" for a few years but it is getting flaky in recent Firefox versions. The other plugins don't work (Totally Not Panorama) or are also unstable (Simple Tab Groups). I'd be more than willing to try a Firefox beta tab group feature if available.

I saw great improvement in 133b2. That's really cool !

The horizontal groups works really good.

I would like more color options though. Either by allowing me to pick my colors, or like Github tags generate colors (front and back) on demand.

The native grouping doesn't work well at this stage with vertical tabs though (which is expected at this stage).

  • Expanding/Collapsing the group don't work
  • The color border is at the bottom, while I believe they should be on the side of the tabs.
  • When the sidebar for vertical tabs is "collapsed", the group name prevent to collapse the side bar entirely.

  • Some tools like Tabs from other devices, History, Customize sidebar, remains on the sidebar even the tab settings says Horizontal tabs.

Also generally speaking, I believe the customization horizontal / vertical should apply to current window, NOT all Firefox windows.

Regardless, this is very exciting. Thank you for making this happening !
