I'm personally a heavy tab user but have always wondered why there is almost no support for tab grouping or customization in the native tab bar in Firefox.

I think making it able to group like Google Chrome does for example or at least giving more access for extensions and add-ons would significantly improve the UI in that regard.

@Jon

I would definitely love to have exactly at least these features:
Naming Tab Groups
Picking a Colour for Tab Groups (If a preset from 10 colours or being able to take colours yourself doesn't matter really)
Unloading Tab groups (this could maybe be left for an extension though)
and Closing and restoring whole Tab Groups

I think those features would be the most important and most common ones that would throw the useability to the front with the likes of other Browsers.

Excellent to hear the Product Team is looking at the idea more closely, I have had to switch from FF to other browsers at work because of the missing Group Tabs, I work with RMM and Ticketing software and without Group Tabs it is like driving a Volkswagen Beetle down the Daytona 500 race track, FF cannot compete with my workflow without Group Tabs. I am not a FAN of Edge or Chrome but the Group Tabs feature is a must to keep my multiple tabs organized and process work quicker. Please also look into putting the unused TABS to sleep after 5 minutes, this is a huge bonus in Edge and really helps with less consumption of the systems memory stack. 👍

I agree with @Vinci480 above, that's pretty much what I would like as well.

With the difference of having "Unloading Tab Groups" as a native feature, it not being left for an extension.

Also, a better UI/UX implementation that Google Chrome has would be appreciated! (Maybe only a color strip on the bottom instead of around the tab? or color the whole tab?

Let your product designers play around with different Implementations.

There are addons that do a good grouping of tabs. But for me, especially when the top bar is full of tabs when I am researching something I would like to see maybe as "subgroups" the chrome like implementation. And of course why not this not to get synchronized with a tree view sidebar ? There are extensions who do something similar but we need a native framework for all these addons to play well together !

I don't like tab groups in chrome, because even when groups are closed they use space on the tab bar (the colored "dots").

If I have many groups then I have too wasted space in the tab bar: I have 22 tab groups, so 22 dots is too much space used for no reason.

Instead I'm currently using the simple tab groups extension, and it works perfectly: no space wasted on tab bar. It has a simple icon and I can position it where I want: currently I put it on the left of the url bar, separated from the other extensions icons.

Also why mozilla should use its limited resources for this when there are many better extensions available?

@SbernecchiaI totally agree about the space in chrome tab groups (I also use the simple tab groups extension) that's why I suggested this, as a second level of grouping tabs, in order to categorize the "unhidden" tabs. For me is a must because even if I have other groups.... in each group I need to categorize the subjects or the sites of the current group.

We should have the option for nested tabs. So from one tab, you can open multiple other tabs...

These new tabs then appear in their own tab bar below. That way you can some how try and keep 10's of tabs manageable.

Also, take a look into how Safari does tab grouping! Their approach is a little different, but really nice and clean 🙂

Tab grouping is the ONLY reason why I left Firefox for Vivaldi. I really don't like content tabs, I just want to put same tabs into the same group and give them a name - like, if I'm looking for a new bike, I'll open a couple of tabs and then put them together in a tab group that's called "New bike".

Tab management in my view is close to or already solved for the vertical case(I'll cover the horizontal one shortly).

One can have organization of "tasks" by marker tabs on the sidebar belonging to a single visible "window"/"project" and a "project view" tab or window that lists per project tasks (if project/window) selected.

For both cases of tab management, capable solutions exist to the grouping or projects view aspect.

In the horizontal case, there is missing on the (horizontal) tab bar the tasks/stacks collapsing(renaming etc.).

If interested please check for plenty more details including the extensions proposed and additional workflow suggestions on my post on tab management at the discussion "Organizing Information".
