I'm personally a heavy tab user but have always wondered why there is almost no support for tab grouping or customization in the native tab bar in Firefox.

I think making it able to group like Google Chrome does for example or at least giving more access for extensions and add-ons would significantly improve the UI in that regard.

What's prevent Firefox from implementing this feature at this day and age?  I'm using Firefox less and less because its lack of tab groups like Chromium based browsers

It drives me insane when people suggest add-ons made by random people.  I will never install an add-on that has access to all my websites, for the obvious reasons.  Even if I trust them now, what if they sell the add-on??  It's crazy.

THIS NEEDS TO BE A NATIVE FEATURE.

I've tried every tab grouping plugin that exists for Firefox. None of them does this in a good way.

Tab Groups is the only reason I'm sticking to a Chromium-based browser, it's that important to me. I'm probably in the minority though.

The problem isn't only that there's no native features like this, it's that it's impossible to modify the tab bar with the current addon system so nobody can make a good tab grouping addon on the tab bar itself, I looked into making my own because I was sick of that feature being missing only to realize this a few hours later.

Seems like my previous comment didn't get accepted - anyway, Firefox really should add tab groups - having different accounts or browser installs for different interests like work, hobbies, tutorials, games and whatever doesn't quite work, and I really don't like using some extensions that don't even add a proper tab grouping.

Hey all,

You may have already heard the exciting news from our CEO (if not, see here) - we have a team working on tab groups. This thread with all your valuable insights will be shared with them, so please keep it coming.

And stay tuned for updates as they become available.

That's great, do we understand correctly that this feature is in the early stages?
Is there a possibility that we will be able to see it in 2024, or at least test it in Nighly?
The best thing would be to have different implementations of tab grouping, like in Vivaldi.
Please don't forget tab grouping for the mobile version of Firefox.
Thank you!

Yes! This is great news 👏

Hopefully we can help test the feature

Thrilled this is being worked on!

My important features for tab grouping:

  • Ability to pin the Tab Group to the left among my other individual pinned tabs (not available in any other tab group feature in other browsers-- I keep checking)
  • Ability to pin individual tabs to the start of the Tab Group within the Tab Group itself (less important than the Tab Group being pin-able)
  • Tab Groups syncing across devices/OSes

This feature is very well implemented in both Edge and Chrome, it seems like something Firefox needs to stay relevant compared to those alternatives. It would be a massive gamechanger for my workflow.

I have experiemented with a few extensions for this functionality and while I respect the hard work that has gone into them they don't hold a candle to the native functionality of competing browsers.

@Jon I'm happy to hear that this is being worked on. It's the last hurdle I have for switching to Firefox fully, as I'm a genuine tab hoarder and can't really use a browser that doesn't have a good tab grouping system.

I recently switched to firefox and immediately felt the lack of tab groups. I am very glad that this functionality is currently under development!
