Status: New idea
  • If a user bookmarks a page/site they are showing clear intent to keep a permanent link
  • If a user pins a page they are clearly indicating that they are not yet finished with the page

Currently, the slightest mistake in FF (e.g. closing windows in the wrong order) causes the user to lose all their pinned sites. If the user notices in time they can recover these lost pins, but why should they have to, and why would a browser ever remove sites when the user is clearly indicating that they are not yet done with them? This seems extremely counter-intuitive.

Some browsers, like Safari, now ensure that your pinned tabs appear at the top of every new window. This means that as a user you can say 'I'd like to read this later' and ensure the page(s) are (i) easily available (ii) prominently visible to serve as a reminder (iii) can be saved semi-permanently without cluttering up your bookmarks (iv) can be easily added and removed as necessary without the need to hunt through saved bookarmaks.

And if a user doesn't want this behaviour? An option to override it could be provided in which FF automatically delete the pins when it opens a new window. There could be a second option where subsequent windows simply hide pins (i.e. they only ever appear in the primary window).

This feels like it gives bookmarks and pinned pages much more defined roles.

Note: I'm still struggling to think why a user would want to pin a page if they didn't want it to persist until they unpinned it, and why they would not want a pinned page to carry over into a new browser window.

@AnonymousThat extension is impressive but not fit for this purpose: when I closed the topmost FF window that now had all my pinned tabs, they were all gone. Forever.

Thats strange, normally if firefox session restore is enabled, the tabs and pinned tabs you had opened should be restored.

Mozilla, please implement this feature, for users, it could be as easy as right-click the tab and there will be two context menu options "Pin tab" and "Pin tab permanently". There are many web applications that do not have native desktop apps and we need to use them daily. No I have them in the first few pinned tabs and can quickly navigate to them using Alt+1, Alt+2, etc. Permanent tabs are a way to go. Bookmarks do not solve this, because I always have to load the webpage making it very annoying, e.g. I just want to quickly add a Trello task. With my current setup, I just hit Alt+1 and in a split second I can add my task. With bookmarks this takes much longer. Same for chatGPT, I want to stay in the same thread, not always opening a new window from bookmarks.

When I pin a tab that is me marking it as important and I would expect it to persist between sessions. Despite having them in my favourites and "Restore previous session" enables, it's all too easy to lose them if there are multiple windows open and one gets the order wrong (or simply powers off).

Please either make the pins permanent or warn users when a window with pins is being closed and it is not the last window.

Having to re-pin things after a mis-click is a royal PITA.

Pin tabs can be locked

If I accidentally open Firefox twice, the Pinned Tabs will not appear in the other window. Moreover, if I first close the window with the Pinned Tabs and then the one without them, Firefox will forget ALL PINNED TABS! I have to set it up again every time and it is very amateurish. I saw that there was a similar request in 2022 and it has not been resolved since, so I started a new idea.

This should be resolved urgently.

Option to auto add pinned tabs to every Firefox window

I think it would be nice if there were an option to automatically keep the pinned tabs that you might have in one Firefox window as the pinned tabs for a second Firefox window too. This would make my life as someone that often has 2-4 Firefox windows open significantly easier. Currently pinned tabs often get forgotten when you do not close the Firefox windows in the correct order and for most pinned tabs I generally speaking just want them to be there in every window I open. They do not take a lot of space after all. To have that option would be great in my opinion

Yes, it's frustrating to lose all pinned tabs after accidentally closing the wrong window.

I use pinned tabs for audio playback (soundcloud, spotify), messenger, or ai chats. It would be so much easier if they were accessible in every window.
