It would be useful if a list of tab thumbnails were overlaid when switching tabs with Ctrl+Tab in Firefox, like when switching apps in Windows. This feature would be useful in full screen mode and could replace the tab bar.

Can you elaborate on what you mean?
Firefox already has a floating bar which comes up showing the title, icon, and screenshot/thumbnail of webpages when switching with ctrl+tab.
(Just ensure you have the ctrl+tab option enabled under General of about:preferences )
