Status: New idea

This came through as a question on reddit with 87 net votes, showing a screenshot of Chrome's "Search Tabs" feature (in the tab strip).

People pointed out that you can search tab titles via the address bar using the % restriction token. However, this is a bit of a multi-step process, unlike the same feature in Chrome, which allows people to do a Ctrl-shift-a and begin typing for the tab vs. the Firefox feature, which requires people to do Ctrl-l then type % space and begin typing the tab title.

Ideally, there would be a keyboard shortcut that would focus the address bar with the restriction token already populated.

This is keeping me on Chrome rather than swapping to Firefox. I agree that CTRL+SHIFT+A is the bind to use. I use it every few minutes on Chrome to jump between tabs. Thanks!

Now that tab groups are a thing, this is the last feature I'm missing before I can make Firefox my primary browser.

With the new sidebar - an alternative implementation would be to add an 'open tabs' entry that looked/behaved just like history/tabs from other devices where you can search all open tabs.... and have it open with Control-shift-A .... 🙂

How could it be that we have a dedicated shortcut for the Add-ons Manager but I need to do Ctrl+L ,%, Space, which really is 5 keypresses to search within my tabs.

Is there an official ticket for this issue?

I open it significantly more often than that these days, thanks to command + shift + A opening it – which I press from muscle memory of using Chrome at work 🙃

Personally, I'd gladly adapt to having to press command + option + shift + A to get that in exchange for consistency with Chrome for searching tabs.

If this existed, it might be my most used hotkey.

I use similar functionality in apps like Discord and Slack that map search to CONTROL+K.

I hit that all the time.

Yes, please give us a shortcut for this! The situation is so dire, Google search hallucinates a shortcut for searching tabs already.

How is it possible that there's not a shortcut for this yet? It's been three years!

My workaround for this problem is to use a keyboard automation utility. I have a custom keyboard shortcut managed by that utility with the following properties:

* It can only be triggered only when a Firefox window is focused;

* When triggered, it sends the key combination ⌘L and then enters the text "% "

However, I really hope that Firefox extends the set of available keyboard shortcuts and supports this use case or, alternatively, adds APIs for extensions to trigger actions like this.
