Just a matter of convenience... I believe on a large screen it makes more sense to have fresher tabs closer to the top, the most active area of the browser (all the controls are there), as less eye movement between them is required.
Absolutely, several posts have made this suggestion already. I've looked into making an extension for it, but can't find the time to dig into how that would work (since it requires some extra permissions to work with tabs).
The open a new tab button should be above the tabs when using vertical tabs
I'm really enjoying Firefox's new vertical tabs feature, however I do have one piece of constructive criticism. The open a new tab button (+) definitely should be above the tabs instead of underneath them. It's a real shame because this one thing is pretty much a deal-breaker for the new vertical tabs feature. I'm using an iMac and it's ridiculous having to move the mouse all the way to the bottom corner of the screen every time I need to open a new tab 😞
According to this bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1914451 the original plan was to have the new tab button at the top but they moved it to the bottom for the time being, so it sounds like they might actually do this!
I think this option ought to simply render the tab list the other way up. That bug seems to suggest messing about with the tab list and having different behaviours in vertical and horizontal mode. I think what we actually want is the same behaviour as normal, but the left side of the horizontal tab bar is mapped to the bottom of the vertical one, and the right side to the top.
Very strongly support this - open new tab and close button in the address bar.
There may be keyboard equivalents but it would be much easier just to click a button and more consistent with what the address bar is often used for e.g. reloading a tab.
I'm a bit baffled and embarrassed because I see there is now a 'new tab' button that I can add to the toolbar. I am pretty confident it wasn't there last time I looked - either that or I have become very unobservant.
So I have sorted my problem by customising my toolbar. (And maybe addressbar and toolbar are different. But my toolbar has my tab's address in it.)
Now all I need is a close tab button to do likewise with.
Acorresponding option for you would be to be able to drag tools into the vertical sidebar. I don't know if that is on anyone's wishlist.
Zapata, I also never knew there was a new tab button that can be put into the bar! Thank you for mentioning that! For anyone that is curious, here's a screenshot of what my actual Firefox UI looks like right now, this is not a mockup. I think this probably solves the new tab button aspect of this issue, but sadly the new tabs still open below, which feels weird and wrong. And another issue is: with new tab button at top UI for vertical tabs, there's maybe some difference in how people feel how it should work with pinned tabs. soulhotel from reddit made an image showing the 2 options https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fis-it-possible-to-have-the-new-tab-...
I made an account just to upvote this! I love vertical tabs but I hate the +New Tab button at the bottom😭 I always have many tabs open so the +New Tab is always at the bottom for me. Firefox devs please I will buy you a pizza if you do this for us 😭
