Implement an Optional HEVC/H.265 Codec Component for Firefox
Description
I propose that Mozilla introduce an optional, officially supported multimedia component for Firefox to improve compatibility with H.265/HEVC video and its supported variants.
Currently, HEVC playback can depend on the operating system, installed media codecs, graphics drivers, and available hardware decoding capabilities. As a result, some users experience playback failures or inconsistent behavior even when their devices have compatible hardware.
The goal is to provide a more reliable and accessible solution for playing HEVC videos both locally and on the web, without relying exclusively on the codecs supplied by the operating system.
Proposed features
1. Optional official codec component: Provide a securely distributed and maintained Mozilla component that expands HEVC compatibility.
2. Local and web video playback: Improve support for HEVC videos in compatible containers, local files, embedded web videos, and supported streaming scenarios.
3. Hardware and software decoding: Automatically select a suitable decoding method, using hardware acceleration when available and falling back to software decoding when feasible.
4. Broader format compatibility: Progressively improve support for Main, Main 10, different resolutions, and HDR content, subject to technical and licensing constraints.
5. Cross-platform consistency: Reduce differences in playback behavior across Windows, Linux, and macOS.
6. Security and transparency: Provide official updates, secure media processing, clear compatibility information, and appropriate user controls.
Why is this important?
H.265/HEVC is widely used for high-resolution video, surveillance recordings, mobile recordings, and bandwidth-efficient video distribution. Users should not have to switch browsers or install multiple third-party components simply because Firefox cannot access a suitable decoding path on their system.
Hardware support alone does not guarantee successful playback. Firefox also needs a compatible decoding pipeline, appropriate system integration, and support for the relevant HEVC profile and container.
Technical considerations
The implementation should account for HEVC licensing and patent requirements, operating-system differences, security updates, and Firefox's existing media architecture. DRM-protected streaming should be evaluated separately because it requires additional integration beyond ordinary HEVC file playback.
Expected outcome
A secure, officially maintained, and user-accessible solution that improves H.265/HEVC playback reliability in Firefox, makes better use of available hardware acceleration, and provides software decoding as a fallback when practical.
This would strengthen Firefox's multimedia compatibility while preserving its focus on security, user choice, and cross-platform support.
