Firefox managed to bring HDR to Macs in 100.0 version. Now it's time for Windows!

It'd be awesome to watch and work on HDR images and videos using Firefox in 2022. Windows is the most popular OS, why not bring HDR here too?
More monitors and devices running on Windows support HDR, so there is an increase in demand of HDR support in Firefox.

The only option for Windows users is either to switch to another browser or to download and use a dedicated app from Microsoft Store.

I've donated over $100 to Mozilla and even campaigned for them among various developer communities but unfortunately it seems like they either don't care about HDR for the Windows version or don't have a good way to hear all the demand behind it!

@Admin @admin2 @admin1 -- Is there a way to get this feature request voted on or included as a part of poll? Anything to help further demonstrate that this is a key feature that many Windows Firefox users have been waiting for...

Windows just got an update to play HDR video while Windows is in SDR mode, which makes HDR a lot more accessible and the advantage of having HDR support on Firefox greater. I have seen some stuff happen on Bugzilla, but it's not super clear how much tangible progress has been made.

While Firefox "supports" HDR for videos. Firefox's web engine is still SDR.

In HDR mode, the Gecko engine needs to become a 48-bit float16 framebuffer (64-bit with float16 alpha), just like Chromium and Webkit already is. From what it seems, it still an RGB framebuffer today, despite being a HDR video overlay. Which limits HDR in non-video-overlay contexts.

On April 4th, 2025, I did tests for full browser HDR features:

Happy 404 Day

One time manual-test special for State of Web HDR on Windows and Mac.
Test Pass = brighter than #FFFFFF hex white supported.
Recommended Display: Any OLED or MiniLED. (LCD HDR = crap)

This is my first post here. I've been using Firefox (switched to LibreWolf a year ago) for over 3 years now, and having an HDR monitor but no HDR support in Firefox is really getting on my nerves. I'm at the point where I'm about to switch to Chrome and give up my privacy just to get proper HDR support. After all this time, it's ridiculous that the developers still haven't added this feature. It's been over 3 years already.

Its crazy we still don't have this...

Getting fed up with waiting.

I switched to Brave. As long as you turn off all their bonus features, seems like a decent privacy option. Plus, you get HDR.

Lol??? im not the only one on this boat?? people making accounts here and posting elss than a week ago to boost this-

Please. please. Ive had my monitor for over a month or so under the (faulty) assumption that firefox supported hdr and NOW just discovered ive probably missed hdr content without even realising it. 😞

I reinstalled chrome purely to have another browser available, (its useful) i dont want to move to it to see content i paid and sacrificed other features for my monitor to be able to support.

I love this browser but i fear it may be the push to seek out a new one if this starts proving to be a problem.

My apologies if this comes off disrespectful, wording is not my specialty. Thank you!

Weird. My comment from days ago seems to have vanished into the ether, but I didn't get any notification about it at all. I got all the e-mails about replies, and even have the e-mail giving me the badge for my first reply (and it's on my profile) but it's gone.

All I think I mentioned was issues with hoping that proper HDR/DV support would be added as all the Chromium-based browsers have a flickering issue with my display when using DV and maximizing the window.

Mozilla is so slow to release HDR in Firefox, that PNG 3.0 is out, with full HDR support, fully replaces TIFF, and added APNG, a Mozilla pushed project, into the specs, finally making it real, even funnier... YOU HAVE PNG 3.0 SUPPORT IN FIREFOX WITHOUT ABILITY TO SHOW WIDE GAMUT AND HDR... AVIF, JXL, JPEG with masking, and now PNG 3, all with full HDR support, but my browser can't show them...

I have no idea why anyone even replies here anymore. I switched back to Chrome. Just give up.
