Making moves
Status: New idea

I feel frustrated with the way Firefox handles updates. I think this is critical functionality and could be enough reason to look for a new browser, even though otherwise Firefox has generally been working well for me.

I think an example of an application that does updates well is the Zed code editor:

  • If there is an update available, it shows up as a small icon in the upper right corner. The icon doesn't cover anything or demand attention to it.
  • If I click to install the update, the same small icon says "restart to update". If I don't restart, I don't loose any functionality in the current session.
  • When I restart to apply the update, the application starts like normal. Nothing new is shown on screen asking for my attention, except for some text in the status bar saying that an update was installed and allowing me to click to see what the changes were.

Firefox, on the other hand, always breaks my workflow with its updates.

  • It asks me to update with a bubble that I have to respond to after I've already started opening tabs
  • If I click to update, I can go on using my browser and often forget about the update. But once it installs in the background, my current session breaks, it seems as if I've lost internet connection.
  • Once I figure out that the reason is because of the update, I need to restart and hope that my tabs reopen.
  • When I do restart, Firefox always creates a new tab showing me what changes or features they have introduced.

These probably seem like small things, but since updates are very frequent this does impact my user experience of Firefox quite a lot
