Escape key to leave address bar and recover prior focus

When interacting in a webpage, I often go to the address bar to quickly look up something using Alt-D (e.g., an autocompletion search).  I then want to return to what I was doing in the webpage.
In Chrome, this is easy using the Escape key.  The focus goes back to where it was previously in the webpage.

In Firefox, Escape doesn't do anything useful in the address bar.
I've seen posts that suggest using the F6 key.  However it doesn't put the focus back to where it was previously.
