Customizable hotkeys

It would be great if there was a way to customize hotkeys.
Here's how I see it:
 * Have a about:hotkeys panel, with all actions listed, and already mapped shortcuts shown.
 * Whether these should be modifiable or not is up to the dev community, ideally they'd be.
 * When clicking on a hotkey field, ideally, there would be a capturing hotkey feature, or, before this, an AHK like syntax to define hotkeys (not as complex, something like: CTRL+H means this and MAJ+ALT+END means that...)

 * a restore to default button.
 * Done.

It can't be done with an extension because some function can't be accessed by extensions (I'm actually looking for a way to send tab to other device while browsing with TST.). Anyway, I believe this should boost productivity in a number of ways. You guys are devs, you know keyboards are faster than mice. 😛

I try to love Firefox every once in a while (mostly a qutebrowser user) as it's a fabulously configurable web browser with great performance which I can mess around with using userChrome.css, about:config and add-ons until I find a sweet spot or completely botch the whole thing and have to purge and redo all of it 🙂

Seeing as it is so gosh darn configurable I am baffled as to why customizable keyboard hotkeys has not been implemented. Imagine other highly configurable open-source software without custom hotkeys - vim, gimp, blender and so on. The power of those few examples would be enormously dampened like a wet blanket on a cold winters day, the same goes for Firefox.

Nice to see this ideas is moving to the next step. I'm using FF as my primary browser for a while now and some default hotkeys are still annoying me almost daily

It would be also great to have a possibility of assigning one key shortcuts.
For example, I would love to use "W" and "S" keys to scroll the page by 50%, "A" and "D" to switch tabs, and "E" to focus the address bar. Of course, such shortcuts should not be listened to when there's focused input field on page.

There is great Vimium C extension which provides such functionality — but being an extension, it's very limited by security measures, e.g. it can't run on speed dial and browser service pages (such as "about:preferences"), and also can't provide some browser-related functionality (such as "focus address bar" and "open inspector" actions).

It would be great, i am use to switch language in translator with ctrl + shift + s but in firefox it's open screenshot manager which i don't even use

New user switching from Opera GX here.

Switching browsers would be a lot easier if I could continue using a lot of the shortcuts I'm used to using.

Not having the ability to choose my own shortcuts feels a little awkward.

Hi @Jon , my idea that was merged into this one was actually meant for the Thunderbird team. I believe this thread is a suggestion for customizable hotkeys in Firefox, not Thunderbird. I'm sorry if I didn't tag it correctly.

I specifically searched for a thread like this to encourage devs to think about adding this feature, personally i'm trying to switch from vivaldi, and for me customizing hotkeys is something essencial.

It seems strange to me that this idea is considered as "new", especially if we consider that in the world of programmers keyboards have always played a fundamental role.

So much so that many programs have always provided the possibility of easily associating hotkeys to any menu commands.

Maybe the developers thought that the typical web browser user tends to use only his mouse (or finger).
Anyway, as they say, better late than never; let's hope the wait is nearing its end.

I agree on customizable keyboard shortcuts. I would like to be able to open a new private window with command + shift + N.

Yes. So far only certain extensions can have customizable hotkeys, but having universal customization would be great.

Definitely hoping for this feature to be added to FIrefox. A few browsers have this feature (Vivaldi, Opera GX) and it would really improve Firefox.
