Status: New idea

I am using Thunderbird 128.5.2esr (64-bit). If I am not mistaken, there is no way to create a recurring task. (I am not referring to the creation of recurring events in the calendar.) It would be nice if Thunderbird allowed users to create recurring or repeated tasks.

There is a way already, at least in version 128.6.0esr (64-bit).  It's not as intuitive as events, though, so maybe this would better filed as a bug or feature request.

In the same way recurring events are created, recurring tasks can be created too.  There's no button for it like there is for "New Event" though.  You can find it in  File > New  menu, or here, I'm just right-clicking on a date and time on the calendar and pick "New Task...":

First, though, you need a calendar to add the task to, so if you don't have any, you can create or import one with the "New Calendar" button in the lower left.  After that, you create the task much like an event:

Here I told it to repeat every week, and it does show up as a task to complete every Friday, but only on the big Calendar view.  In the Today Pane, you can cycle through the view to see Tasks, however the task is always shown even though a day other than Friday is active, it not accurate like the events are, so that's an issue.

Another issue I noticed, perhaps a bug, is after I've completed the task, there's no option to mark it from the big calendar view:

However, from the Today Pane right-click there are more options:

If I pick Mark Completed, or if I put a check mark on it, it marks the whole series completed, i.e. all the future tasks.  To mark only this task complete and leave the rest of the future ones still incomplete, the first right-click menu i showed is needed.  On the individual task in the main calendar view, select  Edit.  Then you'll be asked if you want to edit just this task or all the repeating tasks.  After select "Edit only this occurrence" you can change the status in there to "Completed" and then "Save and close" and just that task will disappear from your calendar while leaving the future ones.

So all the functionality is there, at least, I think, it's just quirky and needs improvement.

Thanks C-AGI for your reply and investigations. Good to know there is a way, albeit it is a bit unintuitive an buggy as you say.

It's also worth noting that syncing my Google Tasks to Thunderbird via my relevant Google tasks calendar is not possible without the extension https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/provider-for-google-calendar/, but even with this extension, it does not detect recurring tasks (which is an issue with this extension, obviously).

Actually, one more thing that I just realised. I'm on TB 128.6.1 esr (64-bit), but I cannot see the same task options as C-AGI when I right-click on a date & time on my calendar to add a task:
