Current Situation:
Currently, managing advanced preferences in about:config is highly manual. There is no global reset button, no log of past changes, and no easy way to identify which custom preferences have been deprecated by recent Firefox updates.

The Problem:

  • Resetting: Users must hunt down modified settings individually or use the drastic "Refresh Firefox" option.
  • Tracking Changes: When a user tweaks multiple settings and experiences issues days later, there is no history log to help them remember what they changed, from what original value, and when.
  • Clutter: As Mozilla updates Firefox, many older preferences are deprecated and no longer function (showing a trash can icon in about:config). These obsolete entries pile up over time, cluttering the configuration and confusing users.

Proposed Solution:
Create a more robust management system for advanced preferences:

  • Global Reset Button: Add a "Reset Advanced Preferences" button not only in about:config but also within the main Firefox Settings menu, making it more accessible.
  • Change History Log: Introduce a history log (perhaps as a sub-menu in about:config or a dedicated about:config-history page). This log should record the date/time of modification, the preference name, its previous state/value, and its new state/value.
  • Obsolete Preferences Manager: Provide a consolidated view or filter that groups together all deprecated/inactive preferences. This will allow users to easily review and batch-delete these useless leftover entries to keep their configuration clean and optimized.

That would be nice, but it won't happen because Mozilla doesn't support using the config.editor.
