I am excited (and grateful) for the new Firefox VPN! It would be awesome to see this same functionality brought to all versions/platforms of Thunderbird (so we can be more protected when on public wifi)! It would still use the same 50GB bucket (tied to our Mozilla account), of course.

In UK, The National CyberSecurity Centre is, through their CyberEssentials programme, eventually going to mandate the use of two-factor authentication on all business email accounts.  Given that many want to remain using open standards like IMAP and JMAP for their business email, connecting to your mail server through a VPN which then has an IMAP server behind it, will be becoming a more common thing.  So this is the reason why building the Mozilla VPN into Thunderbird as well as Firefox will be a good idea.
