Currently, you can create an AND filter (this AND that AND Sam) that triggers on the match of all of the AND parameters. Similarly, you can create an OR filter (this OR that OR Sam) that triggers on the match of any of the OR parameters.  However, you can only create an AND/OR filter (this AND that) OR (Sam OR Jim) manually (by editing the filter script) that will only trigger on a match to this and that combined with either Sam or Jim. Note: this could be done with two unique filters but I have too many already.

Filter creation should provide the capability to create more complex AND/OR filters without the need for manual editing of scripts.

I'm trying to jump ship (outlook)

Their message filter (rules ands alerts) is better designed

so I'll give u an example from outlook, so you enter  "your terms", below is the filter layout

Apply this rule a/f msg arrives

w/ "1234 or 3456 or 6789 or 99876 or......" in the subject

and w/ "Zebra" in the subject or body

and stop processing more rules

When this can be done, w/in t-bird, outlook is dead for me

Making moves

I think it would be extremely useful to be able to add Message Filter Rules with the ability to use AND OR operators.  Currently, the closest thing to this is "Match any of the following", but sometimes I want to be able to filter depending on if X is true, or Y and Z are both true, not just X or Y or Z are true.

Just to add to this idea, I have a use case where I get emails from a global service "Amazon" for example and I want to sort all things related to orders into a folder, so I have an additional rule of "Subject - contains - Order", but because I order from different countries when I'm working or visiting, thus have an Amazon account in that country I want to add an additional "Subject - contains - Pedido".

This is also very common for food delivery apps and the likes, an example of two emails both getting sent to the same folder for the same reason, but the language is different would be:

> From: Just Eat - Subject: Tu pedido ha sido aceptado
> From: Just Eat - Subject: Your order has been accepted

Currently this would require two rules of "Move Orders to Food Orders (English)" and "Move Orders to Food Orders (Spanish)".

If I was able to just create a submatch of the subject where I can specify that this would be an OR case, I could condense this down to "Move Orders to Food Orders".

As many users do, I use Thunderbird as my main Email Client and I'm pretty satisfied with it.
However, receiving a huge amount of emails every day made me face the Filter section, which I find quite rusty for its potential. The current filters are surely ok, but it would be really better if the user could build complex filtering expressions, to easily group same-treatment emails under the same rules. It doesn't need to trample the current UX - it just needs the possibility to build nested boolean basic algebra, and that's it.

Furthermore, once the user is able to build an efficient "mail secretary" via these new set of rules, it would be critic to be able to export them into another Thunderbird instance using any open format file, like a JSON or anything else.

Hope it helps!

Perhaps look in on the filtaquilla addon https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/filtaquilla/

It does nested logic via JavaScript as well as regex matching.

It is long overdue to introduce logical operators. I cannot understand why this extremely useful functionality, which has been suggested by users in many places in the past, has still not been implemented. Perhaps the new suggestion will help 🙂

Currently, the Message Filters feature allows only for AND and OR with "Match all of the following" and "Match any for the following". It would be good to have an option to add more advanced filters, to be able to perform actions like for example:

Match all of the following (AND):
From is "example@example.com"
Subject contains "sentence A" OR "sentence B"
...etc

It can be done by making separate filters for each case (one for sentence A and one for sentence B), but it makes filter management tedious from the perspective of end-user, when setting and especially updating groups of filters containing many rules. Matching multiple messages via a single filter with mixed AND OR would improve the readability of user-created filters and make it easier to manage the filter list.
