Having the ability to unload tabs is great, but it would be cool if there was a setting that would auto-unload tabs after a certain amount of inactive time (one that the user could set, with a default of maybe an hour?). You could exclude tabs from it, disable it entirely, or have it ignore tabs playing media (or other conditions).

That’s a solid suggestion — an auto-unload timer with exclusions would save memory for heavy tab users. A few other browsers already offer similar “sleeping tabs” features, so adding a configurable idle-timeout (with a default and exceptions for active/media tabs) would fit well in Firefox. I’d recommend posting it on Bugzilla as an enhancement request so the dev team can track it.
