Status: New idea

Hi Mozilla team,

Thank you for already making tools like ChatGPT and Gemini accessible in Firefox. That’s a great step forward!

I’d like to suggest expanding this idea: can you allow users to add any AI assistant(custom URLs or web apps) directly into the Firefox Sidebar, just like we can currently add custom search engines?

This would give users:

  • Quick, persistent access to the AI of their choice.

  • The ability to integrate open-source or privacy-focused AIs (e.g. local LLMs, Perplexity, Claude, or custom ChatGPT setups).

  • A streamlined workflow without switching tabs.

Ideally, we’d be able to add any web-based assistant as a sidebar panel — either through a simple "Add to Sidebar" option, or by supporting manifest features similar to side panel extensions.

It would also align perfectly with Firefox’s values of customization, openness, and user empowerment.

Thanks again for your great work, and I hope this can be considered!

Best,

TheZupZup

Making moves

Locally-run models are definitely a feature we should have. Having the browser feature tied to a third party service is inherently a compromise on privacy.
