I've been waiting for years for Mozilla to allow users to hide the tab bar.

It would be nice to have a built-in tab-side-bar but allowing us to hide the tab-bar most definitely should be a must. There already are add-ons like Sibery that provide a great side-bar experience.

Yes, PLEASE, give us an option to hide the horizontal tab bar. Like LeonHard already said, that is the most important part of the request. A native side bar is optional IMO as there are already several extensions that add a vertical tab bar on the left or right, I use Tree Style Tab. But all kinds of CSS trickery is required to get rid of the horizontal tab bar, and even then it leaves behind an ugly empty area that takes up valuable space. Just make it a toggle, just like menu bar and bookmark bar.
