Status: New idea

Hello Mozillians,

Since several years now, Firefox choose to make "Add Bookmark" window (Ctrl-D) a fixed size. I really like the workflow for the user of clicking on the url bar's star then choose a location in my bookmarks folder to save it.

That's the point where the user experience become cumbersome and, after a while, really infuriating especially on desktop.

The problem:

  • In most situations I need to click one more time to expand the "location" window. Sometime I doesn't need to, but if it were already expanded it wouldn't bother the user either. One less click in many situations, not a click more in any other situation. Win-win.
  • "location" window is way too small. On desktop I have a large screen but I am forced to, again, click and drag the side bar to painfully look for my bookmark folder. A 7 lines tall window for something like 30 lines tall bookmark folder (without sub-folders expanded).

To fix those issues, in "Add Bookmark" menu (Ctrl-D):

  • "Location" drop down menu should be expanded by default. Even if it is not always needed, it doesn't add supplementary click ever.
  • Last used location in "Location" should be remembered.
  • Remove the most used locations shortcuts we have now (or make it optional) in "Location" drop down menu. For me, those are rarely needed. I often need to go in a sub-folder anyway.
  • Make the "Add Bookmark" and more specifically the "location" drop down window resizable and/or larger. This is the most important modification.

On a side note, I did research how to resize this window. I found old posts and issues spanning several years and many subpar solutions about extensions (most doesn't exist anymore) or userChrome.css file to bypass this UI problem.

I hope it doesn't come to harshly on the Devs of Firefox. It's an amazing piece of software that I love.

The issue is not so much trying to bookmark every website, but if you have a well-developed folder structure for your bookmarks to make it easier to find links, then the current window is too small. However, I found an extension called Bookmark Search Plus 2 that makes it very easy to add a bookmark to anywhere in your folder tree by right-clicking the folder and selecting Bookmark tab here. This should be included in Firefox rather than relying on an extension.

Increase the size of the folder selection box when adding a bookmark

I have a lot of bookmark folders. The folder selection window is very small. Can you resize the folder selection pane when adding or editing bookmarks?

Add-Bookmark: Location-Window is too small to navigate easily

I suggest increasing the size of the very small window to find the location of the folder when adding a new bookmark.  If a user has a large number of folders and sub-folders, it can be challenging  to search through them because the small window only shows a few folders at one time.  Perhaps, even make the window expandable so the user can determine how much to view.

@Jon Is there any way to escalate the priority of this highly-requested feature to the development team? It's been 3 years.

@viped17735 yea let me surface this to the team and follow up here.

Strollin' around

I agree with this suggestion, as it would make adding a Bookmark MUCH less prone to error, especially for users who have a huge number of specific category folders, as I do.

Truly, one of the most annoying deficiencies on Firefox.

Hi folks.

@viped17735 you're wrong, unfortunately - it's been 17 years: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=418864

I just discussed this separately with Marco (FF dev) who advised I tried to gather support in Firefox Connect (hence my finding this), but this substantiates the point I made 11 years ago in a connected thread: judging how many people want to see this solved, as a function of noise made on a bugzilla thread, seems like an exceptionally inaccurate gauge of actual interest. Users need to know enough to know when functionality is a bug, care enough to search about it, care 'more enough' to find the bug page, sign up & log in & post & subscribe. And now: care enough to follow the updates, email devs directly, find the NEW thread in the NEW bug discussions page, and comment there.

I can't claim to know much about coding, but it seems insane to me that we live in an age where people are vibe-coding apps in a weekend then making 6-figure businesses out of them by the next weekend, yet a community of users have been imploring FF to make an incredibly minor change to resize a panel for 17 yerars and gotten nowhere.

@Jon please do let us know where things stand mate. And IDK if this already exists but if you could also make the 'enter' key save the bookmark, which everyone in the world assumes would be default behaviour, that would be dreamy also.

Cheers!
