I’d like to suggest adding a GNOME-style theme as a new design option for Thunderbird.

A modern GNOME-inspired interface could bring a fresh, clean, and contemporary feel to Thunderbird while maintaining everything that makes Thunderbird powerful and capable. The goal would not be to remove or hide advanced functionality, but rather to present it through a more polished, consistent, and visually modern interface.

GNOME’s design philosophy focuses on minimalism, clear visual hierarchy, consistent spacing, and reducing unnecessary visual clutter. These principles could help make Thunderbird feel more approachable and pleasant to use — without sacrificing the depth of features and customization that power users rely on.

I believe this would be a valuable addition for several reasons:

  • Modern appearance: A clean GNOME-inspired design would give Thunderbird a more current and visually appealing look.

  • Better visual consistency: Consistent spacing, typography, icons, and UI elements could create a more cohesive experience.

  • Simplicity without sacrificing power: The interface could feel simpler and more intuitive while keeping Thunderbird’s advanced features readily available.

  • More user choice: An optional theme would let users choose the visual experience that suits them best.

  • Stronger modern identity: A refreshed design could help Thunderbird feel more aligned with modern desktop environments while retaining its unique strengths.

  • A better balance for all users: New users could benefit from a cleaner interface, while experienced users could continue to access the powerful tools and workflows they depend on.

Importantly, this would not need to replace the existing design. It could be introduced as an optional theme, allowing users to switch between the current appearance and a new GNOME-inspired experience.

Thunderbird already has an impressive amount of power and functionality. I think the next step could be to give that power a fresh, modern, and cohesive visual experience — making Thunderbird feel both powerful and beautifully simple to use.

I’d love to hear what others think. Would you be interested in seeing an optional GNOME-style theme for Thunderbird?
