Please unhide browser.download.start_downloads_in_tmp_dir and add it as an option on our main Settings page. I've noticed for awhile that files I've opened to view were being automatically downloaded into my downloads folder, but I haven't investigated it until now. I found out this goes back to 2022! My downloads folder is cluttered with files I only wanted to view and not save.  On a previous thread on the Mozilla Support forum, I found that a new hidden setting was added so we could c...

While this has been shared elsewhere, I can't seem to find any actual response from Mozilla other than "we changed it, and now it's like this". When choosing to open a PDF in Firefox, it now saves it directly to Downloads. I (and it seems like quite a lot of other people as well) need to frequently view a document in Firefox, but I rarely need to save it. If I wanted to save it, I would either choose to save it in the first place or use the download button in the PDF viewer. Now I have to b...

I would like to suggest an improvement for Firefox regarding file handling. Currently, when users choose to open a file instead of downloading it, the browser saves the file in the Downloads folder. This can lead to unnecessary storage usage and requires manual cleanup. I propose that Firefox bring back the option to store these opened files in a temporary folder instead of the Downloads folder. This approach would: Prevent clutter in the Downloads folder. Save storage space by a...

Please fix this, or give me the option to just open a document.  I do not want to save each and every document I open. I do not see the logic in this decision.

I have been very happily using Firefox for several years on both my laptop and mobile.  I am now going to deinstall from both after the change to how downloads are handled. The recent arrival of Windows 11 as well as this change has caused me way too much grief and confusion. I am sorry to have to do this since Firefox seems to have the best system for cleaning out the browser on exit. Maybe I'll be back??

Previous versions of Firefox defaulted to allow a temp copy of a file (e.g. an excel SS) to be saved and opened instead of manually finding a location. Can this feature be turned on in the current Firefox release?   Thanks Craig

Has anyone seriously asked for these changes? I have been using Firefox since Windows XP days and never once thought "man, I could use LESS options when downloading". For years I relied on the temp folder to take care of files I just want to open once, now I have to delete all this junk manually. The provided justification: I want to approve each download before it happens, is there still a way to do this? Firefox no longer shows the dialog because downloads are usually intentional. Ever since a recent update, I've been frustrated by how PDF links are behaving--- When set to 'Always ask' in browser settings, choosing 'Open with Firefox' in the resulting dialog box still causes the file to auto-downloaded to my PC. So instead of showing the file's URL in the address bar, the local address is shown, e.g.,, file:///C:\Users\pcname\Downloads\filename.pdf  This used to show the file's URL, which is helpful when sharing the link, saving it somewhere, citing it, etc. I...
