Apparently this problem has been going on for years and Mozilla does not see fit to fix it. I download a lot of files and have decided not to use Firefox as my default browser because it always puts files in the Downloads folder even with the "Always ask you where to save files" box checked.

This feature was great, and one of the reasons why I stayed with Firefox when I tried it. From stopping accidental downloads to avoiding malware, being able to choose to keep a download instead of automatically putting it on my device was really helpful, so I suggest adding a toggle(alongside the options for individual files) to choose between asking for all files or auto-downloading. I'd greatly appreciate this change.

Sorry I'm new around here so I'm not sure I get the difference between Ideas and Discussions. Changes to how file downloads are handled in Firefox version 98 is a breaking change. Before this, FF understood that there are 2 different reasons why a file might be downloaded: Because the User explicitly wants to save a file for later reference - these files were saved to a directory chosen by the User in Settings Because the System needs to save a file e.g. in order to invoke an external h...

Managing PDF downloads and viewing has become a big problem with version 89. I am a programmer who has been working on healthcare applications for a few years and there are scenarios where it is convenient to download and in others where it is convenient to preview the document. These scenarios vary from application to application, but also within the same application. So these types of behaviors should be left to whoever designs the application, not to the browser. Today I have a lot of p...

Why is it that FireFox wants to download everything into some obscure folder instead of the folder I want to file to go into?  (Namely: run/user/1000/doc/xxxxxxx/{long list of folders}). This usually happens when I want to save the file directly to a flash drive without saving to the hard drive.  If the file is deleted from the obscure folder before the flash drive is removed, the file is also deleted instead of leaving it on the flash as intended. Seems like the folders are being u...

Please disable this feature. We previously had the option of choosing whether to download the file or view it in a third party app via the temporary folders. Now it doesn't give us this option and all the files are filling up my desktop and it is a very annoying task to keep deleting all the unnecessary files.

Downloaded files are saved to disk The files you download will be immediately saved on your disk. Depending on the current configuration, they will be saved in your preferred download folder, or you will be asked to select a location for each download. Windows and Linux users will find their downloaded files in the destination folder (this is usually the Downloads folder). They are no longer put in the Temp folder first. I DON'T CARE THAT THIS HAS BEEN VOICED BEFORE AND I WILL SAY IT A...

Dear Firefox team, It is good that I can choose to a) open a file with Firefox, b) open it in a different app or c) download it. It is not good that all three of those actions lead to the file being downloaded into the specified download folder. I'm aware of the ability to choose this folder in the settings. However, I would really appreciate the option to choose a different folder for files that are just viewed vs. files that are intensional downloads. I understand that files need to be s...

I have my setting in Firefox to "Always Ask" when opening a PDF file.  When the dialog box appears I choose either open in Firefox or open with Adobe Acrobat Reader.  This works perfect except that a PDF file is also downloaded to my Downloads folder.  Why when I just want to "View" a PDF file, a downloaded copy of the PDF also gets put into the Downloads file?  If I wanted this to happen, I would have choose to Save file rather than view it.

I have set my PDFs to always ask.  A recent update is now the second time that I have to change the behaviour back, because Firefox updates change it to open in Firefox. This is VERY bad for me in Internet Banking. When I perform an Electronic Account Payment / Electronic Funds Transfer and then click on the "Proof of Payment" - which should download the PDF to a folder of my choosing - it instead opens the document in Firefox.   If I now click on the "back" button, my banking s...
