Hi everyone,

My name is Amber Meryman and I’m a product manager with Firefox. I’m excited to share a new way to make your Firefox experience uniquely yours - Custom Wallpapers for your New Tab page!

What are Custom Wallpapers?

Wallpapers let you personalize the look and feel of your browser by choosing from curated collections of wallpapers and now, finally, uploading your own! This feature is designed to make your daily browsing experience more vibrant and tailored to your style or mood. You can also set your New Tab Wallpaper to any custom color - from the brightest pink to dark gray.

Try It Out

The Custom Wallpaper feature is now available for early testing. If you’re running the latest Firefox (any channel) you can navigate to Firefox Labs and check the box to enable Custom Wallpapers. From there, navigate to a New Tab and click the “gear” icon in the lower right to launch the Customization Panel. Look for the “Upload an image” option and go from there!

Also, Custom Colors

In addition, there is now a color picker for New Tab Wallpaper, so any custom color can be used to match your mood.

We Value Your Feedback

We can’t wait for you to try Custom Wallpapers and colors so you can tell us what you think by commenting on this post. Thank you for being a part of the Firefox community and for helping us make Firefox a browser that truly reflects your style!

And on mobile???

Great question! Mobile support isn’t on the schedule just yet, but I’ve shared this feedback with my mobile counterpart so it’s on their radar.

Hi, thank you very much, this is a nice long awaited feature that has never been implemented in Firefox and now it's here and it's great!

One of the main questions is, will there be any work on the ability to choose your own wallpaper in the mobile version of Firefox?

And what do you think about such improvements?
1. The ability to choose live wallpapers, mp4, webm, as well as slideshows from selected images.
2. The ability to set a wallpaper by clicking on an image from the context menu, the option “Set as image in a new tab”
3. Wallpaper category for a new tab in addons.mozilla.org.

And there are 2 bugs
1. Delayed appearance of the image when you start or restart the browser.
2. Delayed appearance of the image when opening new tabs.

We are very grateful for your work, and we appreciate that you hear us!

Thank you for the kind words and thoughtful suggestions. It is so helpful!

Mobile support isn’t planned yet, but I’ve shared your interest with my mobile counterpart.

Live wallpapers, slideshows, and AMO categories aren’t in scope currently, but I’ve added these to our feedback tracker.

I especially love the “Set as image in a new tab” from the context menu idea, as it's very intuitive!

As for the two bugs, thanks for flagging. We’ve been working on bugs, and they'll be fixed in the next release.

Appreciate you sharing all this.

I and probably a whole lot of other firefox user want to know why in the world did it take firefox years and I literately mean years, to offer what most if not all other browsers has had for years?????  I finally got tired waiting for firefox to catch up with their competitors and did a workaround creating a CSS file, but like I made comments and feel very strongly that I and others should've not had go to that extent when every other major browsers has had that option for years.. And now y'all are so proud of offering this option when really it should've been an option for YEARS.. if it hadn't been for a certain add-on extension that firefox has that other browsers don't have I would've stop using firefox has my default browsers years ago..

You forgot to say thank you

Thank you for what?

For a feature that you wanted so much that you "did a workaround creating a CSS file". Thank you Mozilla for a this long-awaited feature.

Really? Really? Indeed, I did wait a long time and obviously it wasn't something that they didn't seem to cared about in addressing though there was a lot of folks asking why firefox didn't have a option that most if not all other browsers has had for YEARS, if they really cared they would've done something about it years ago unless they didn't have any web platform developers that had the capability to develop the option of personalizing firefox homepage background which I would think that wasn't the issue.. Sooooo, it had to be one or the other either they didn't care cause if they did obviously they would've not waited YEARS or they didn't have the smarts to implement the option into firefox.. And I sure did get tired waiting on them and did what they seemed not to care to do or didn't have the capability to do and created a CSS file and didn't matter if they didn't do it till kingdom come.. So, I'm not gonna thank firefox for something they should've done YEARS ago and in doing so forced me to do what they couldn't or didn't want to..

Hello,

I am very happy about this new feature, but I wanted to report a bug:
when I select a .svg image the image appears in the current session, but when I close and restart the browser it's gone and I only have the standard grey background.
Also the formulation, at least the french one "Envoyer une image" (Send an image) is a bit confusing because it suggests that you have to send an image but you only have to select ("choisir") one. I think "Choisir une image" or "Choisir de l'appareil" (Select from device) would be more clear (or do the images really be send to Mozilla??).

Thank you for your work and this feature (I really like the custom color)!

Thank you so much, and we're glad you're enjoying the feature, especially the custom color option! I like that one, too. 😉

Appreciate you flagging the .svg issue. It sounds like the same bug we're seeing across formats after a restart, but we’ll test .svg specifically to confirm.

Also, on the French translation - you're right, images are never sent to Mozilla, they're stored locally. We'll review that wording to make it clearer.

Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback!

i want this feature on my android phone, those wallpapers are already boring!

Mobile isn’t on the schedule just yet, but I’ve shared this feedback with my mobile counterpart so it’s on their radar. It's great to see the responses highlighting the importance of mobile support. 😉

Thanks. I'm enjoying the custom colors and actually enjoy the celestial options (I'm usually a plain color wallpaper fan). Hope mobile is next.

Thank you for your feedback! (I, too, enjoy the custom colors a lot.)

I don't have Firefox Labs anymore in Firefox 138.01!?? Nor the option to set a random color. I had to enable a setting in about:config to have the option to upload an image in settings on the new tab page.

Edit: I know why now. It's because I have the data collection unchecked.

Thanks, this is great! I have a suggestion for the Firefox Home wallpapers in general.

Could the 'primary colour' or tint be calculated from the wallpaper, and used for the hue of the other elements? Primarily the search box. Currently it has a constant blueish-grey appearance which is a nice colour, but really doesn't work well with certain wallpapers - for example, those in Celestial.

I have a niche suggestion too. Could we have the option to show the Firefox logo even when all other Home elements are disabled? I want to show off my Firefox but don't want the other new tab stuff!

Where?  My FF is saying it's up to date.

I wonder if it's disappeared along with my choice to "Open a specific page or set of pages"
