Dear Mozilla and Firefox Team,
You’re falling behind. Gecko isn’t cutting it anymore, and it’s embarrassing to see other engines like Ladybird getting more attention and progress than Servo. Instead of wasting time and money on AI projects no one cares about, why not focus on what actually matters? Collaborate with Igalia and the Linux Foundation. Bring back the people who worked on Servo or shift some of your current team to revive it. It’s time to make Servo the engine it was meant to be.
Mozilla’s been making bad decisions for years, and it’s killing Firefox. The Terms of Service incident is just one example of how out of touch you’ve become. Show people you’ve changed. Admit your mistakes. Start fresh. Retire Gecko. Revive Servo. Prove you still care about innovation and your users.
Stop wasting time and resources, just do better!
Sincerely, A Frustrated Supporter

Mozilla should try to make their tech more interoperable with other leading technologies like C/C++, Java/JVM ecosystem, etc by working with communities/companies/organizations developing or using such tech. Mozilla is already doing it with some existing companies like KaiOS Technologies, they aim to improve browser engine and features used in KaiOS, improving security, performance and compatibility with modern web tech. KaiOS is actually forked from now defunct FirefoxOS which was designed as an open source alternative to Android and iOS, the goal was to create a community developed smartphone operating system for emerging markets however it failed to compete with Google and Apple, KaiOS Technologies forked FirefoxOS and aimed to create a light weight operating system for feature phones so KaiOS wasn’t directly pitched against Android and iOS, there is a demand for such feature phones especially in emerging markets like India for several reason like affordability, simplicity and some other factors like many people like to use feature phone as their second phone and many don’t want to use smartphones because they don’t need it for their computing tasks, famous example is Director Christopher Nolan who still rely on traditional computers(laptops/desktops) for his computing needs. Mozilla should learn from their mistakes made on FirefoxOS project, they need to pitch their products better by analyzing current and future emerging market trends while providing innovative products by focusing on R&D by creating deep global partnerships with Universities, Research Institutions, industry leaders working on and utilizing such technologies, Mozilla should also try to get more community contributions worldwide. It should be much easier for developers/companies/organizations to create solutions by utilizing the tools and resources available of their choice, for example better integration between Rust and C/C++, Java/JVM tech will enable development of projects like new Firefox based on Servo for browser engine and using Java/Scala/Groove/Kotlin/C++ for user interface and other elements, it will increase developer contribution as there will be more developers from different backgrounds willing to contribute to project of their choice utilizing languages/frameworks and other tools in which they are comfortable. Mozilla can also do partnerships with companies who are willing to build custom version of Firefox by adding their own tech like GenAI features and Mozilla can certify and promote these custom versions of Firefox on their own infrastructure after rigorous testing to make sure that it follows their ethical and community guidelines, for example Microsoft used Chromium open source project to build current version of Edge and integrated with their own tech including AI tech like Co-Pilot so a company like Elon Musk’s xAI might want to produce their own modified version of Firefox with their own extensions and customizations especially integration of GenAI tech like Grok but maintaining and improving any large open source app/tech after forking it can be a very time and resource consuming daunting task so Mozilla can step in to help in this process while ensuring compatibility with existing open web and tech standards and earn revenue in this process and it also open the door for further improving the tech which Mozilla is developing because the company or the organization will have access to that tech and can directly help by contributing to it. This can also help in changing the Mozilla operating process, which is currently less structured, Mozilla can take inspiration from other communities like Eclipse Foundation specification process and Java Community Process which will be a more organized way while ensuring increased participation and contribution from various organizations and companies by providing a platform for collaboration through dialogue, discussion and innovation. Mozilla should also try to diversify its revenue sources by starting other ventures like an open source and open standard based advertising business which respects user’s privacy while providing an alternative to existing companies, there are some companies like Seedtag and Matomo who are focused on privacy-first advertising strategies but they aren’t very successful compared to companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc. Mozilla can try to change that with their effort in this domain by providing innovative solutions which can attract companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, etc. These high-tech companies want new revenue sources to monetize their solutions (ChatGPT, Claude) and are hesitating to introduce ad-based revenue model because of concern of user privacy, product integrity, incentive misalignment, content bias and manipulation which will result in reduced quality product causing distrust among their users so they would be happy to do partnership with someone who has strong goodwill like Mozilla who emphasizes values like privacy, openness, and the belief in the internet’s ability to enrich lives.
