I had the same issue with win 7 64 bit, the esr's just kept getting worse, tabs constantly crashing or the whole program would crash. I tried other browsers including Thorium but most browsers don't support win 7 anymore and won't install. Finally I installed the last Firefox before the esr release, found a way to stop the update popup and viola, all has been good a week so far.
