The new Thunderbird is so SLOW to delete messages. It used to be instant. Now it takes about 5 seconds per email, and deleting a bunch takes that amount of time PER EMAIL. Why is it so slow now? This is a giant step backwards. What was wrong with the old method?

I did what Saramon said and the slow deletion problem was solved:
For Windows Anti-Virus go
to:
Virus & Threat Protection Settings > Exclusions > Add or remove Exclusions
Add following folders: (Just adding the Local folder didn't work for me)
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles

To significantly speed up message deletion, us shift+delete, instead of just delete. This will skip the ability to undo the message deletion.
If you still have difficulty, please with speed please file a support request https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/thunderbird
