Share your feedback on the AI services experiment in Nightly

Hi folks, 

In the next few days, we will start the Nightly experiment which provides easy access to AI services from the sidebar. This functionality is entirely optional, and it’s there to see if it’s a helpful addition to Firefox. It is not built into any core functionality and needs to be turned on by you to see it. 

If you want to try the experiment, activate it via Nightly Settings > Firefox Labs (please see full instructions here). 

We’d love to hear your feedback once you try out the feature, and we’re open to all your ideas and thoughts, whether it’s small tweaks to the current experience or big, creative suggestions that could boost your productivity and make accessing your favorite tools and services in Firefox even easier.

Try doing some research into the environmental impact of LLM and associated 'ai' products.  If you have a shred of care for the rest of us and the planet our children have to inherit, you'll stop using such wasteful technology. 

In it's current form it should never have been allowed to proliferate, but then corporate profits have always been more important that the people generating those profits.

My organization recommends being careful with information typed online, whether in search engines or LLMs. Because I'm a geek, I mostly use local, pretrained models with Ollama. I understand it's a lab option, but only ethical, open and privacy-friendly bots (like some provided in Ollama and Llamafile), identified after careful examination by your AI team, should be offered in Firefox - and why not providing them in a friendly AI-model store!

Hey! Is there a way to open the chatbot sidebar with a keyboard shortcut?

I love this feature. But it feels restricted to the original sidebar button. Just add a button "AI chatbot" that i can place in my toolbar and customize, which will open the same in the sidebar. Other browsers already have AI integration. Its about time firefox got its own. Only for people who need AI.

I only want it as an extension, not built-in.

Some issues:

- this forum is horrible for getting ideas across. (Old) Reddit's style is so much easier.

- add option to use a popup/overlay instead of taking over the entire sidebar. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to pick the most annoying option. Look at how an extension like Tab Stash does it; it can show information in several different ways. The attachment shows at least three with the top-right pop-up the thing I was referring to.

- hardcoded prompts, even for an experiment, is inexcusable. You can't even set them in about:config.

I like the AI sidebar option (opt in and no one gets hurt).

But I'm missing a setting to change it to a custom URL. E.g. in our company we have an explicit ChatGPT instance, and self hosted Meta-Llama. We are only allowed to use those for work.

I'm using this feature 10-20 times a day and there is a serious problem, when I'm starting dialogue with chatgpt it does not reopens after sidepanel was closed by me or hidden by pressing "show sidepanel" button (it opens from start always, no matter of time), please fix this

I am not on board the AI hype train. I choose Firefox in order to avoid big tech collecting users' data as much as I can. And one should not neglect the serious environmental impact of using this technology.

Having said that, I do acknowledge that a limited use of LLMs can be useful in certain cases. As such, I would say that what I would like to see you doing is:

1. Expose and set local LLMs as the default,
2. Provide users an easy way to choose / download llamafiles (with some info on the advantages of using model X over Y etc),
3. Allow users to run llamafiles directly from within the browser,
4. Explicitly warn users about the risks of using other chatbots.

Another couple of details:

1. I would prefer to have a dedicated section with actions when right clicking rather than having to to "Ask localhost" -> "Action",
2. I think "show prompts on text select" can be a bit intrusive and should be off by default,
3. It would also be interesting to have the ability to use this service in a second sidebar.

(Tested on Firefox via Labs - not on Nightly)

Coming back to the idea of setting local LLMs as the default for anyone interested in using them and specifically integrating llamafiles within Firefox, I would like to see a complete management solution like a special settings section where:

1. llamafiles are organized by categories e.g., "text", "image" etc,
2. each model comes with a description of its capabilities,
3. I can download, remove and possibly update llamafiles (for example keeping the same base model but using a different version as they are organized currently on Hugging Face).

Exactly! Was Firefox2.0 not based upon C++, Perl4>, and Ruby, if any other language, before 2007's ginormous corruption? Users and local servers lost so many rights and programs, right afterward. Firefox 3.6.9 was even spectacular, but has Mozilla and all illegal corporations associated not wanted to make all of Firefox go Oracle Java6< and .Net3< and Python3< and Swift3<? It would be the same as Chrome (Fome), Edge, Opera, Safari, and their insane descendants.

Could the AI sidebar be placed in it's own container? I have a separate container for using AI Chatbots and it would be nice if the sidebar had it's own container or use the container I had already created for AI chatbots.

The 'Prompt on text select' is too easy to misclick. It's also visually jarring to see the icon pop up whenever I select text. I prefer accessing those options through the context menu (the menu opened with a right click).

New shortcut for the chatbot is causing issues with my password manager. Tried disabling the sidebar in the settings but it keeps popping up when pressing CTRL+SHIFT+L.

I think it's a pretty bad shortcut because a lot of password managers use it for autofill.

This needs to be fully disable-able.

At the moment, I turn it off in settings, try to get Bitwarden to work, but you've hijacked the keyboard combo and instead automatically re-enable this AI thing and then pop it up.

Either allow the keyboard shortcut to be disabled, or this entire feature to be disabled.  At the moment, you've blocked that - as you allow a keyboard shortcut to enable it and immediately run it, even if turned off in settings.  (With no hint of shortcut keys.)

I didn't care about this feature until you took the Ctrl+Shift+L I always use on my password manager for this feature. But it is a HARD NO for me!

This has been mapped to an annoying shortcut and activates on its own, even if I uncheck the box. Please fix this.

I started using Firefox as an alternative to Google Chrome about a year ago. It was smooth at first, but something changed.

My first real issue, STOP with the constant updates! (Yes, I disable automatic updates because I read them first). If you have security updates, don't package them behind experimental (dumb) add-ons.

LLM development inside Firefox, over just an extension looks bad in my eyes. Why? because it seems like you just want to collect people's data so you can yourself become another one of those types of companies (Google, Facebook).

On this same topic, I continuously see warnings and/ or highly negative comments based around implementing LLMs, but Firefox ignores those comments, Why?

Why give users votes, if you're not going to use them? This isn't a video game forum where you can easily blind people with gimmicks. People will see the bull s h i t.

I call on Firefox to not automatically contain large language models, unless the individual downloads it directly as a feature. It shouldn't automatically be contained in the Firefox browser by default, but as a separate download.

I came here to get away from all the fake labeling of artificial intelligence, because it's not actually intelligent.

Mozilla is playing a very dangerous game here with LLMs. If someone leaves Google for Firefox, they would happily leave Firefox for less.

Frankly I do not want AI in anything, let alone my browser. I think it goes completely against the privacy that Firefox focuses on and holds dearly to have the ability to use such a data hoovering "tool" that is AI chatbots. Please reconsider adding this to our browsers. Is it really worth compromising the end user's privacy with a tech trend that probably is gonna tank in the near future?

Use a very obscure keyboard shortcut to pull up the window. It currently uses Ctrl+Shift+L which is one I use all the time and now I need to adjust my muscle memory for a feature that re-enables itself every time I press the keyboard shortcut.

I use Taskade which integrates ChatGPT and think that could be a very interesting partnership.

For those who want AI go off to a seach engine or website and play but don't embed more junk in the browser. Totoaslly unnecessary, apart from the fact that AI is far from 'Intelligent' and is barely pre -Alpha market hyped machine learning crud.

I'd rather you spent some figuring out the H265 scenario so we can play videos again than on this meaningless nonsense, and keep up to date with config settings so we can disable them easily across our network widewith policies instead of introducing features with no EASY way to to disable them as is current policy.

I can see it being useful for School but please add a shortcut to toggle it, otherwise it is mostly in the way. If you add support for local LLMs like llama 3 I might actually consider using it, since I don't want to use any of the built in alternatives.
