The new reduced tile size is dreadful and means the identifying text beneath the tiles is now partially absent. I am trying to restore the original size but with no success so far.
Did anyone actually think about this design change before imposing it?

Agree. It also doesn't make sense. I can't think of a reason for the change. I would undertand if they increased the amount of tiles and reduce the size to fit everything, but that isn't a option. It changed just because.

Changing "newtabLayouts.variant-b" worked temporarily. The option would change back after I restart the browser.
Even removing the relevant study in "about:studies" wasn't enough. Small icons kept comming back.
Finally I got tired of trying and just deactivate studies flat out in the browser preferences. That did the trick.

Thank you. I'm a bit dim with tech things so how do I "deactivate studies flat out in the browser preferences" ?

Hi.
Don't worry, it is very simple. You go into "settings" > "Privacy and Security". Scroll down until the data collecting section. You are going to see a checkbox with the option "Allow Firefox to install and run studies". Just disable it and you are good to go.
