Increasing the usability of Mobile tab groups

Firefox for Android finally has tab groups, but no way to interact with them, except for manually dragging tabs in and out in the tabs list, which is pretty slow and clunky. There are two features that would solve 90% of my personal use cases for tab groups:

1. "Open in new tab in group" in the context menu for links. Chrome for Android has this. The most common use case for tab groups for me is when I'm reading a page, and it links to one or more related pages, and I want to open them up and keep them grouped with the current page.

2. "New tab in group" in the "New Tab" context menu. My second most common use case for tab groups is when I want to look up something related to the page I'm already viewing, and I want them in the same group. The context menu for the tab list has "New tab" and "New private tab." Adding "New tab in group" would solve this.

3. Bonus feature: "New tab" and "New tab in group" context menu for address bar search results. When I open the address bar and type a URL or query, it replaces the current tab. It'd be awesome if I could tap and hold on the search results and choose "open in new tab" or "Open in new tab in group." That'd be a wonderful time-saving shortcut for power users.

Other feature that would be great is to edit groups : remove a tab from a group without closing it.

You can already adding it by dragging and dropping it in a group or with the contextual menu but not the opposite.

Your #1 and #2 are currently in development and we are aiming to get them out in version 156, so stay tuned. We are also looking to improve the dragging of tabs in and out of groups. 

For #3, this is an interesting idea we do not yet have planned. I'm going to bring this up with the team and see what we can do.

Thanks a lot for the work on tab groups!

I would like to address a question regarding the logic of tab groups. I compare tab groups feature to what exists on desktop; there is a single "Open in new tab" action, and if a tab is opened from within a group, it stays in that group.

While with separate buttons "in new tab" and "in new tab in group", I see this as making 'preserving the group' feel like an option rather than the base behavior. This creates some ambiguity, for example if a webpage link triggers a new tab (e.g. with target="_blank"), will it preserve the group or open outside of it? I want to make sure, will base behavior for opening new tabs aim for preserving tabs inside groups?

maybe another way of saying what I mean is, when tab is inside a group, options "in new tab" and "in new tab in group" behave rather as "in new tab outside group" and "in new tab (implied inside group)". I don't suggest renaming them, but saying that that's how technically logic would be seen.

Another feature I wanted to suggest is actions closer to desktop, with single "open in new tab" button, and an option I've seen in Opera browser (mobile) - is that when opening link in new tab, tab group is automatically created if current tab isn't already inside one.

This could result an option with three variants: 1. Two separate buttons ("new tab" and "new tab in group") 2. A single button that doesn't auto-group, or 3. A single button that does auto-group. Maybe if there's going to be tab groups API for mobile for interacting with tab groups, third option would be possible with an extension instead, and as well be supported on desktop, but would be nice to have natively.

But this is just alternative vision of tab management and I think is low-priority. As soon as any way of opening tabs inside groups is going to be implemented, it's already great!
