Frequent Freezing and Crashing in Firefox on Windows 11: Any Solutions?

I'm using Firefox on my Windows 11 laptop, and lately, I've been noticing that it keeps freezing or crashing unexpectedly. It seems to happen mostly when I have multiple tabs open, but sometimes it just happens randomly with a single tab. I've tried disabling extensions, clearing the cache, and even updating Firefox, but nothing seems to help.

It’s becoming quite frustrating as I rely on Firefox for both work and personal use. Has anyone else faced similar issues, and do you have any tips on how to fix the frequent crashes or freezes? Would love to hear if anyone has found a solution that works for them!

First, ensure that Firefox, Windows, and your graphics drivers are fully updated, as outdated drivers often cause stability problems. One common fix is to disable hardware acceleration by going to Firefox settings under “Performance” and unchecking both recommended performance settings and hardware acceleration. If the issue persists, try running Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode (formerly Safe Mode) from the Help menu—this temporarily disables all extensions and themes to help isolate the cause. Some users have also fixed crashing by going into about:config and setting media.wmf.vp9.enabled to false, which disables VP9 video decoding. If you’re using any overclocking software or undervolting your GPU or CPU, try disabling those settings as they can also trigger instability. For a more in-depth check, use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to perform a clean reinstall of your GPU gas drivers. Additionally, running memory diagnostics using Windows Memory Diagnostic or Memtest86 can help rule out hardware faults like bad RAM.

My wife and I are both having this issue on Windows 11. It never happened to me on Windows 10. I "upgraded" last night, and now it's happening to me.

Firefox is once again freezing up, and when I'm forced to go to Task Manager, find multiple (anywhere from 6 to 18) "instances" of Firefox running. No wonder it's freezing up! This is not a new problem - it's been a constant for years, if you look back over various discussions. So why can't this be FIXED? Stop telling us to turn off this or shut down that - FIX IT.
