The only way I've found is through about:config and setting sidebar.revamp to false.

I hate the sidebar.  It should've been offered to me, but not forced on me.  I wasted too much time trying to figure out how to close it.  The only solution was to change it in about:config, which I shouldn't have had to do.  Please, if you are movin...
