There's actually no current solution for this, you either have vpn for all tabs or none.

In areas with ip filtering, it would be nice to enable it for only specific sites/tabs;

Example; I enable it for reddit, but not youtube/online banking app ect

It's a win/win, you also save bandwidth costs.

Alternatively, allow this new vpn to be used with container tabs like the paid firefox vpn.

That's a really good idea.

The VPN app should be expanded to include a tab list.

List all open tabs and make them selectable with a star. Clicking the VPN extension would then display these starred tabs.

A feature that works based on domain names would be great (i.e., reloading them after a Firefox restart to automatically activate the VPN).

I found it really strange that the VPN settings say: 

"Use VPN for all web sites except ones on this list. Add a web site here or by opening VPN."

But I can't do the converse: enable for all websites (except on list). 

Further: it doesn't allow * options like *.tld.com 

Really strange design choice 😕
