Typing ^ in the awesomebar should show most recent matching history

User goal: I want to open a link which I viewed a few hours earlier.

What I did: I opened a new tab, and typed ^ in the awesomebar, followed by the name of the website.

What I expected: A list of recently visited pages which match my search, with the most recent at the top.

What I actually got: "Firefox Suggest" showed me older pages, from weeks earlier, but not the link from today that I was looking for!

It was probably showing me popular places, which is helpful when searching bookmarks with * or just typing in the awesome bar. But I feel this does NOT fit with history search with ^, which should show most recent pages first. (Didn't it used to work that way?)
