๐Ÿ›กProposal: Add Realโ€‘Time Security Alerts for Suspicious Extensions in Firefox
โ€œFirefox browser window showing a warning popup about a suspicious extension, with options to report or remove it.โ€โ€œFirefox browser window showing a warning popup about a suspicious extension, with options to report or remove it.โ€

Firefox is known for its strong commitment to privacy and user control โ€” but even with Mozillaโ€™s rigorous extension review process, risks remain. Some extensions may, after installation or updates, begin to silently monitor webpages or capture screenshots without the userโ€™s clear consent.

Suggested Feature

Introduce a builtโ€‘in security monitoring layer in Firefox that:

  • Continuously checks extension behavior against its declared permissions.

  • Flags suspicious actions (e.g., hidden page listening, unexpected screenshot capture).

  • Displays a clear, actionable alert: โ€œThis extension is performing actions outside its stated purpose. If unexpected, consider reporting or removing it.โ€

  • Offers oneโ€‘click Report and Remove options directly from the alert.

Why This Matters

  • Protects users between Web Store reviews and realโ€‘time usage.

  • Reduces the risk of malicious updates slipping through.

  • Empowers all users โ€” technical or not โ€” to take immediate action.

This extra layer would strengthen Firefoxโ€™s reputation as the browser that puts user safety and transparency first.
