When going through my email, I often encounter individual messages and message threads. These two different message types have different button bars displayed. I often review my mail in a session, and it would be very useful if I could keep my mouse in the same location to quickly delete either.

As it is, I may be deleting a large number of single emails, but then accidentally archive a mail thread I did not intend because the button shifted.

It is very annoying that the button layout at the top of the message changes between messages. This is causing me to occasionally click the wrong button when processing a lot of email. Please fix the layout so all buttons are present at all times and just gray out those that do not apply, do not remove them. That way the Delete button will be in exactly the same location for every message and eliminate the potential to click the wrong button.

Hello

Of course, this is not the expected answer
However, if you practice, userChrome.css, if you'd like to test https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/edit-the-foreground-background-colours-of-the-interface-buttons...

Ah, it is! Thanks.
I'm fine with closing this idea in favor of that one.

I have 100 emails to plow through, deleting 99 of them.

So I put the mouse cursor on top of the delete button.   And I start reading and clicking.

The first email is deleted.

The second email is reply

The third email is spam

The forth email is archived.

The fifth email is reply all.

And so on.

And the mouse cursor hasn't moved.

It's 2026, not 2001, we're not still figuring stuff out.

Build out the mouse buttons from the left or the right.  BUT BUILD THEM OUT.  DO NOT RANDO MIX THEM UP.

So when I put the mouse cursor on top of a button, the button DOESN'T MOVE after the first mouse click, and then keep moving randomly.

Lord almighty.

@ReallyPissedOff,

I'm certain you are seeing a problem but I'm struggling to understand how.

In what part of the screen are the buttons?  Or please post a screen shot.

Does Bug 844475 - When selecting multiple messages, archive and delete buttons should use the same positi... - look like your problem?

Actually, the description here in the initial comment is more clear and and complete.

Yep. I think it captures the problem quite well. Thank you!

Making moves

Maybe part of same issue as bug report:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=844475

This is a long standing design flaw.  When using 'threaded' option,  some emails will be single emails and others will have threads. If threads are collapsed, when selecting emails, the position of the Archive button and the Delete button move when a thread is selected or not. If you previously were selecting threads and clicking on 'Archive' and suddenly you have a single email and in the Rhythm of clicking you will now accidentally click on 'Delete' as all the buttons suddenly move. Equally, if deleting a load of single emails and then select one with a thread, suddenly it got archived and not deleted. However, this is not so obvious if you use gmail, because they just remove the label and store in All Mail. But many people do not subscribe to see 'All Mail' as it just doubles the use of space, so they have no idea it's not deleted.

So it's just inconvenient, but if people delete by accident and also have the setting to empty trash on exit then you are looking at potential data loss.

Thunderbird developers need to be looking for a solution which does not move the position of the Archive and Delete buttons.

Additional:

But maybe the postee of this issue, is also talking about the moving of the 'Reply' button more to left when an email also has the option to 'Reply to List'. Normal expected reopsitioning.

Maybe the issue depends upon whether Text suddenly alters to just icons due to space.  I would suggest the postee uses the Thunderbird Support Forum to ask for some input on the issue to see if this i due to a particular setting or use of an addon extensions. Obviously there is a need to see various images showing this significant alteration between a delete and a reply.
