Improve Firefox for Secure Browser-Based Remote Desktop and Remote Device Access

More people are using browsers as their main workspace, and I think Firefox could make remote device access much more seamless.

Today, accessing a remote computer often means installing a separate remote desktop application, configuring networking, or relying on a third-party service. For someone who simply wants to securely access their own computer from another device, this can add unnecessary complexity.

It would be interesting if Firefox offered stronger support for browser-based remote desktop and secure remote device access workflows.

For example, Firefox could provide better support for web-based remote sessions that allow users to securely connect to their own computers without requiring a dedicated desktop client on the device they are connecting from.

Some useful capabilities could include:

• Secure browser-based remote desktop sessions

• Keyboard and mouse input

• Clipboard sharing

• File transfer

• Multi-monitor support

• Automatic reconnection after temporary network interruptions

• WebRTC-based low-latency communication

• Strong authentication before starting a session

• Clear indicators showing when a remote session is active

• Privacy controls for camera, microphone, clipboard, and screen access

Privacy would be especially important. Users should always know when a remote session is active and which permissions are being used. Ideally, sensitive session data could be protected with end-to-end encryption wherever technically practical.

I've been exploring this problem through Ollalink, which focuses on self-hosted remote desktop software, browser-based remote access, and managing remote devices. Working with these workflows made me think that Firefox could become an even better platform for secure remote computer access.

I don't think Firefox necessarily needs to become a complete remote desktop application itself. Better browser capabilities, APIs, permission controls, and WebRTC support could make it easier for trusted remote-access applications to provide a secure experience.

This could be useful for developers accessing a workstation remotely, IT teams managing devices, people accessing a home computer while travelling, and users who prefer not to install remote-access clients on every device.

Would other Firefox users find better support for secure browser-based remote desktop and remote device access useful?
